For this project, we studied the work of the Viennese artist-architect Friedensreich Hunderwasser. We devoted an entire class period to looking and examining his work. We learned that his common theme in his work was bright colors, organic forms, spirals, domes, and his rejection of straight lines. We looked at pictures of his paintings and his fantasy homes. The students were amazed on the decorative quality of his line and the boldness of his colors. We discussed how he worked outside the traditional rules of modern architecture. He believed that man and nature should be one and so he created buildings that they were aesthetically pleasing, rejecting the tyranny of the straight line. The students loved his colors and patterns and they definitely understood his love of organic lines. In our second session, we decided to create a Hunderwasser-inspired work. In doing this, the students were free to incorporate their favorite motif from his work. They created a work based either on his paintings or his architecture. We used three class periods to complete this project. Next year, I will design an entire unit based on the work of Friedensreich Hunderwasser. Hunderwasser Student comment: "I wish I lived in a house like this one. My house is boring." This student worked on the dome motif and created a colorful composition based on Hunderwasser's love of curvy and organic lines. Hunderwasser Using black sharpies to create the organic lines. Student comment: "I don't want to use straight lines ever again." This student is working on his anthropomorphic design. Student comment: "This is my fantasy house." Hunderwasser This students loved the lollipop trees of Hunderwasser. The student used a CD to draw the circles and black sharpies to create the spiral design. Student comment: "These are the prettiest trees ever." Hunderwasser Student comment: " The blue house is mine; the pink is my brother's and the orange is where my parents live."

Project objective(s): - Discuss the concept of scale as found in Will Ryman's work - Examine the connection of art and the environment - The variety of materials in creating large scale works - Create your own gigantic roses in the style of Will Ryman Will Ryman is a New York based artist who created 38 large scale sculptures of rose blossoms towering as high as 25 feet. In every cluster of roses he placed a ladybug, beetle, aphid or bee, thus making reference to the viewers' own bug's- eye- view of his gigantic roses. “With these roses I wanted to do something that was larger than life and site-specific. In my work I always try to combine fantasy with reality. In the case of The Roses, I tried to convey New York City’s larger than life qualities through scale; creating blossoms which are imposing, humorous, and hopefully beautiful,” comments artist Will Ryman. Beauty "roses", and the Beast " the buildings". His work forces the viewer to look at things from a bug's -eye- view. Will Ryman and his gigantic roses in the artist studio. Since this will be a large scale project I decided to include Kindergarten, second, third and fourth grade students. This project provides an excellent opportunity for students to understand cooperation and exchange of ideas. The final product will be displayed in our school's library. Materials for the roses and brunches Freezer Paper, Plastic Coated, 75ft Tempera paint Liquid water color Masking tape, or glue Brunches of trees ( fallen from our trees in our school's Nature Trail) Aluminum foil The Kindergarten students painting the sheets of the Freezer paper. We painted the dull side of the paper. Understanding the problem with scale. Not enough space on the table for the large pieces of paper. The paper is dry and ready for folding. We covered the brunches in aluminium foil. Third and fourth grade students hard at work. The involvement of our bodies in completing our task. Second, third and fourth grade students are folding the paper to create the petals of the roses. We marked the center of the Plastic Coated side of the freezer paper and pinched it. We used our fingers to manipulate the folds of the paper to resemble rose petals. We placed folded masking tape on the center of each sheet of paper and placed the additional pieces of paper on top of each other. The top three pieces of paper were cut progressively smaller. The first part of this project is accomplished. Two blooming roses.

In this project we will explore the relationship between positive and negative space. We created original visual images using a variety of templates. Observing that the shapes of the negative spaces are determined by the shapes of the positive spaces. We used candles to create textures on the paper. Using printing tools to add more texture. Space and shape work together to complete the composition. We used water colors to review the wax resist method of painting.

In trying to find artists who use American Indian symbols in their art I discovered the artist Tom Gilleon. View his work here Tom Gilleon's grandfather had immigrated to the United States from Scotland. His grandmother, was a Cherokee and descended from a band of tribal members who refused to relocate into a reservation in the Oklahoma Territory. I was so impressed with the aesthetic qualities of his teepees series, that I decided to introduce his work to our students. Here is how he describes the spark and luminosity found in his teeppees. " My memory of the important events in my early life are set somehow in dramatic theater lighting. We lived in a little place where there was no electricity and the inside of our wooden home was lit by kerosene lanterns. I always felt drawn into the light and everything around the glow disappeared into a blur." Tom Gilleon The artist Tom Gilleon For this project the students were given two options in creating their-Tom Gilleon inspired teepee. 1. Use American Indian symbols to decorate the teeppe. 2. Use simple lines for the teeppe and place the emphasis on the background. Tom Gilleon Tom Gilleon Tom Gilleon Tom Gilleon Tom Gilleon
