Visto el atractivo que ofrecía la ciudad de Newport para un visitante, este viajero decidió proseguir su paseo para conocer aquello de lo que pudo ir asesorándose previamente acerca de la ciudad. Decíamos que la apertura al mar imprimía un carácter especial a Newport. Visitados los muelles, el paseo continuó hacia el Storer Park, un lugar privilegiado frente por frente al faro (lighthouse) de entrada al puerto en la Bahía de Narragansett… Llamaba poderosamente la atención la vista desde lejos del puente sobre dicha bahía. El puente salva la bahía parta hacer llegar los vehículos a la ciudad por la Ruta 138. Es una estructura armoniosa, muy simétrica, de tablero de estructura metálica en celosía, con alzado curvo y vano central colgante con péndolas rectas de cable. Las dos pilas enormes que sostienen el gran vano central son de hormigón armado y aporticadas. La luz del día acompañaba para la fotografía y el viajero, que tiene su corazoncito profesional, le tiró unas cuantas imágenes con su cámara combinando las distancias focales con varios objetivos… El resultado de puede ver el al álbum en un conjunto de varias imágenes y debo decir… que me gustó. Claiborne Pell fue un senador demócrata por Rhode Island durante 16 años (1961 a 1997). Dejó huella por su impulso a la “Beca Pell” (así se la denominó) que proveía ayuda financiera para los estudios universitarios de los jóvenes norteamericanos… Desarrolló una intensa y creativa actividad política, llena de iniciativas legislativas y, al parecer, bastante ejemplar, y a su retirada como senador, se dio su nombre al soberbio puente del que estamos hablando. La belleza del puente, piensa este viajero que rinde honor a una persona tan respetada y querida como fue este senador, fallecido el primer día del año 2009 a los 91 años de edad. Igualmente importante de ver fue el Old Quarter, el Barrio Antiguo, de Newport, constituido fundamentalmente por casas de madera combinando con ladrillo y que se extiende hacia tierra adentro en las proximidades de los muelles. Era donde vivían, ya desde la segunda mitad del siglo 18º, los capitanes y oficiales de los barcos, los industriales de la pesca, etc. Bastantes de las preciosas casas de colores, llamativos pero nunca molestos ni chillones, tienen alguna placa conmemorativa y/ó explicativa acerca de los antiguos moradores… Todo muy ordenado, limpio, tranquilo, acogedor, hermoso, apetecible para instalarse allí… El viajero, al que le sale frecuentemente una vena documentalista ó de reportero, disparó con su cámara, fachadas, detalles, formas, colores, puertas, etc. componiendo al final un conjunto de imágenes que pueden ilustrar suficientemente a quien ó quienes tengan alguna curiosidad… Son un total de 52 las imágenes que integran este álbum. Las primeras 15 imágenes de la galería que se forma con esta carga (los visitantes no suelen pasar de la quinta…) son las que este viajero ha considerado un poco más atractivas y más definitorias ó representativas de este álbum… Para terminar esta presentación de acompañamiento, añado la despedida de siempre, o sea que soy muy consciente de que estas fotos suelen ser muy poco visitadas y, mucho menos, comentadas (subo demasiadas, es cierto)... En cualquier caso, aquí están, para ser compartidas, y espero que les puedan gustar a quienes de detengan a verlas. Cuando menos, algunas de las imágenes creo que puede merecer la pena verlas
