Cerebral angiogram of the blood vessels in my brain. I added selective colour to the original greyscale image The following story may upset people who are squeamish about medical procedures. This was taken to check for blood clots in my brain following the severe Staphylococcus aureus infection in my sinuses. The procedure involves having a catheter inserted into the femoral artery (the main artery of the leg) on the inside of the groin. The catheter is threaded up through the artery, past the heart (not through it!), and into the carotid artery leading to the head. From there it's threaded up towards the brain. You can see the end of the catheter near the bottom of this image. The patient is conscious throughout this procedure. I could feel the catheter inside my head, though only as a dull secondary sensation as it was wiggled around, since there are no nerve endings in there. It wasn't particularly unpleasant, just a bit weird. An x-ray contrast dye is injected via the catheter and x-rays of the head taken continually for the next few seconds as the blood circulation carries the dye through the arteries into the brain, then back out through the veins. When this dye is injected, it does weird things to the optic nerves, and you can see bright sparkling flashes of light even with your eyes closed. It also causes a brief but intense hot flush in the face and head, a bit like you've eaten way too much vindaloo too fast. The worst part of the procedure is actually once it's finished. Since the catheter is inserted into an artery, you need to keep pressure on it for about 2 hours until the wound closes against the arterial blood pressure, and can't move your leg for the entire time. The first time I had this done (I had a second one some weeks later) the wound oozed blood all night and my hospital bed was rather a mess by morning. The second one was a lot better. See where this picture was taken. [?]
