Whether we've already discovered them or not, we all have our own ways of finding inner peace. For Hannah Bullen-Ryner, it comes through reconnecting with Mother Earth.
For our final work in our portrait unit, we completed a Surrealist-style collage drawing. We had previously spent a lot of time drawing realistic portraits and features so this time around we completely "cheated" with the face part of the work by starting with a magazine portrait (human or animal). This artwork was of great inspiration for us as well as the Surrealist work of Dali and Kahlo. I used the steps found here to build this lesson from. We used Crayola markers for the color wash in the background instead of the fancy ones mentioned in the post. Use water brushed over the marker color outline to create a bleeding effect. It's beautiful underneath the patterned overlay.

About The Artwork The collage was exhibited in Birr, Ireland, in the summer of 2022 as part of a special exhibition on migration. In my work, I often deal with urban development and population. Migration of people into cities plays an essential role. There are many reasons why people move to cities. Often they hope for better living conditions and individual freedom. The city is the place of desire and danger, of opportunity and threat. It attracts with its big city lights and repels with its stone facades. One cannot live with it and one cannot live without it. Life in the city can overwhelm with anonymity and indifference and hang over one's head like a sword of Damocles. With the paper collage I wanted to show this diversity of individuals and possibilities. With the rise I wanted to show the hope and dreams that these people share. But it can also come to the fall... Last August, Nancy Markham was shocked to learn that she and her children were about to be evicted. It wasn’t because she couldn’t make rent or because her children couldn’t keep the noise down. It was all because she called 911 when her ex-boyfriend, waving a knife, refused to leave her home in Surprise, AZ.

A series of analog collages entirely made by hand. These collages belong to a creative period of the years 2018-2019. To make them, I mainly used glue, newspaper and magazine clippings, cardboard, colored paper, pencil, acrylics and pastels.
