Voila! Yes, this took me forever to post, due to... maybe just lack of time! This was such a fun collaborative art project to do with all the 3rd graders at my kids' school. The 3rd graders were studying quilts and patterns, so we collaborated on a modern day quilt with 140 pieces in 42 blocks... out of paper instead of material and then into a mural for display at their school. Here's a short tutorial: Prep: Measure and pre-cut your masonite plywood(1/8" or 1/4" thick) to fit the number of squares or rectangles you want. Layout your shapes, pencil (free-hand works great) your lines in, number them so you can put them back together, and then cut. Pre-drill holes into masonite board, frame with 1"x 2"s and fasten with screws (nails eventually poke out) flush with board. Add corner braces/support (triangles). Spackle front of board, dry and lightly sand. Paint: First draw with pencil, then paint (acrylic works best, not poster paint). There were enough cut shapes for each child to paint 2-3 shapes. Collect: Look at all of those shapes on my table! I sorted them by number to each numbered rectangle, and joined the quilt blocks together with small pieces of tape to create each row. The entire masonite board was painted with black acrylic. Adhere: I adhered each row by brushing Mod Podge on to the back of the paper, then pressing/flattening onto the masonite board. Lay plastic wrap on top of artwork, and then lay books on top with additional weight if needed. I adhered the taped-together rows, row by row to make sure they'd all fit. (Go HERE to see a more detailed tutorial of adhering a mural with Mod Podge) Patterns & A Modern Quilt: To help create a quilt look, I left a 2" black edge, creating a "binding". After it was all adhered, I applied 3 light layers of Mod Podge for a protective coat. This turned out really well... the kids were sooooooooooooooo proud to present this! They sang me a little "thank you" song at the end. (I'm standing in the back with an orange sweater holding onto my daughter.) Had a wonderful time! Let me know if you make one, I'd love to see, whether great or small! Join my exclusive email list for my upcoming Candice Ashment Studio shop! I do NOT SPAM! PLEASE NOTE: This is an ART project, NOT a coloring book style template!! Please read this description carefully before purchasing! Collaborative art projects are popular at school fundraiser auctions everywhere. My "Masterpiece Mosaics" lesson will help you create a successful class auction project that will drive parents into bidding wars! PLEASE NOTE: This is an ART project. It does NOT contain a printable template for coloring!! A "Masterpiece Mosaic" is a reproduction of a famous artwork, where each participant re-creates one small section of a painting. This is NOT a ready-to-go template that students just color in. Rather, this is an actual art-learning experience where students practice looking carefully at shapes, colors, and proportions in order to duplicate a small section of a fine art poster, using oil pastels on a separate piece of card stock. These pieces are then assembled together and mounted onto foam core board for hanging. "Masterpiece Mosaics" are inexpensive to produce, fun to make, and totally irresistible! This is NOT a ready-to-go template that students just color in. It requires quite a bit of prep, but the results are worth it! You will need to purchase a poster of the famous artwork you want to reproduce and then cut it into the appropriate number of pieces for your students to each have one piece. Each student will use their observation skills to copy their section onto a piece of card stock (like a blank index card). The teacher then glues the pieces onto "foam core board" and covers the whole thing with a clear sealer. Two options for framing are presented, to accommodate different budgets. In this 19-page pdf booklet, I'll walk you through the steps for creating your own "Masterpiece Mosaic". You'll learn which products to use for best results and I'll share my tips for success from start to finish. Students will develop their observation and color matching skills as they work together to create a "copy" of a famous masterpiece. The result will be totally charming and completely unique! You'll have a collaborative project that students will be proud of and parents will want to own! A gallery of student mosaics from grades K - 8 will inspire you to make a "Masterpiece Mosaic" with your own students! PLEASE NOTE: This is an ART project, NOT a coloring book style template!! I did my first altered puzzle! Altered puzzles have been another one of those items on my long list of "want to try" projects... Well, I finally did it! VOILA! It was a 24 piece Winnie the Pooh puzzle that I got from Dollar General. What's great is that it came in a great little tin that I can alter later. So for those of you out there who like to (or have ever wanted to) alter puzzles or Altoids tins, go to the Easter section of Dollar General for a super deal! Or just go find any other random puzzle, they all work great! A doodle monsterpiece with some flower confetti. I used my cheapo rotary tool to sand down the piece edges after putting paper on them. When you use the exacto knife to cut around the piece, there are still rough paper pieces that kinda overhang the edges. Sanding them with the little tool really helped the pieces actually fit back together again. And some wire elements on this piece. Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out... Honestly, I had a hard time focusing and actually FINISHING it. I just had to think of each piece as a puzzle piece-shaped inchie. That made it a little easier to complete, even though I think I slacked on several pieces. Anyhoo, happy Tuesday! I hope springtime is treating you well, and my condolences to those of you with allergies right now...
