Magic lantern thaumatrope circa 1890 I'm sure you've all seen a kaleidoscope before and I wrote about thaumatropes here but what a a zoetrope or a praxinoscope? Advertisement from Emile Reynaud's praxinoscope Inspired by my recent visit to the film museum in Paris and the wonderful exhibition on magic lanterns, painted film and 400 years of cinema, I've been looking for some of examples of optical toys and early forms of animation. Thaumatrope, circa 1880 Detail of a magic lantern slide - The magic lantern and bear showman, Lapierre, circa 1850 Animation is a fascinating subject. I have a few magic lantern slides and flick books at home but nothing quite as beautiful as these shadow cards A set of 12 shadow cards, circa 1880 or these mechanical slides Handpainted mechanical slide I'd love to start collecting zoetrope and phenakitiscope disks like these (there are some absolutely beautiful ones in the exhibition). Zoetrope disc, circa 1860 French phenakitiscope disk, A.Giroud, circa 1850 French phenakitiscope disk, A. Giroud, 1850 French phenakitiscope disk, A.Giroud, circa 1850 The V&A's Childhood Museum is a reliable source of information if you're interested in finding out more about early animation techniques and can't get to Paris to see the magic lantern exhibition. All of these examples above came from François Binetruy's Orangerie antique shop in Versailles. François has been collecting items for over 40 years and has acquired some amazing pieces, which he has put on line here. Go and explore his site, it really is a treasure trove for lovers of vintage toys and all things animation-related. à suivre...
It's cold, it's snowing everywhere and it's time for some colour. Merijn Hos' bright Wood Sculptures are a perfect winter pick-me-up, don't you think? The entire series of the Dutch artist / illustrator's 109 faces was recently on show in the US at Beginnings, NYC. I think they look fantastic grouped together. I love the niave, primitive quality to some of these characters, and enjoyed showing them to my kids yesterday. Inspiration for a craft project with your own children or art students, perhaps? Why not? I'm sure they'd have great fun fashioning a few funny figures out of cardboard. A rich and varied portfolio for you to explore. Love! via

The Dogs and The Fox - Aesop I came across these beautiful textile sculptures by Bryony Jennings from Pretty Scruffy a while ago and I've been dying to share them on K&C. If you look at Pretty Scruffy's gallery and shop, I'm sure you'll agree that Bryony's work really is different. I think the donkey and the doe are two of the nicest handmade soft sculptures I have ever seen.

It's a while since I've come across a collection of soft toys with so much personality! I love Zilasaule's original handmade creatures all the way from Moscow. Although Ilya Donets and Margarita Stchetinskaya focus primarily on illustration, they are also keen to undertake graphic design and art projects, with a little help from their daughter Zoe (great styling!) I'm not sure if they've opened a shop yet, but they do have an uptodate blog (in Russian), which I will be following from now on. My Find of The Day, then!

This is how it started: An abundance of beautiful conkers from the park. What to do with them? Eva naturally started to play with them: counting, arranging, touching and, ahem, licking. They seemed so shiny and beetle-y, so that is what they became. I used a mixture of enamel paint (the little pots used for model-making) and ready mixed poster paint. The enamel paint gave a fantastic finish but took ages - at least 24 hours - to dry, whereas the poster paint took a couple of coats and dried quickly but also chipped easily. Nail varnish would be good, or some sort of coloured lacquer, if such a thing exists. I made a nice box for them to live in and some grass to munch on. We took them back to the park. They went on the roundabout: the little elephant ride: and then had a rest on a bench. Eva wanted to sleep with them, a seal of approval if ever there was one. I am so pleased with how these turned out, they brought so much colour and play to a rainy gloomy day. {the fab eleven}

Bonjour ! Rusty nails, well-worn linen and distressed wood with a long, long story to tell... If you've been following me here or on pinterest for a while, you will know how much I love simple, soulful finds. Our own home is full of them, collected over the almost thirty years I have lived in France. I have always loved vintage items, and I enjoy giving them a new life or juxtaposing them with something modern or unexpected to bring out and enhance their simplicity. We try to go the local flea markets regularly and although we've already accumulated so many things, I usually bring something new home every time...no self-control in the vintage department you see! I often dream of having my own little bricks-and-mortar shop to share my love of vintage and handmade objects. I wouldn't need a big space, small and intimate would be fine. I would invite guest exhibitors - artists, artisans, makers of magic - to share my humble commercial abode. Creativity would reign, coffee would be served and cakes eaten too! If I close my eyes, I can see it all quite clearly... I think my ideal shop would look like Coil4 I am so happy that I have found this Japanese store! all images taken from coil4's blog - un régal !
