Fig. 16. From a drawing of a hill with contour lines added to a contour map. Popular map reading. 1928.
Credits: Wikipedia So far we’ve used our Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to create hillshade and color relief. Contours is another common cartographic method used to show the shape of the terrain. If contour lines are placed close to each other, it means that the terrain is steep. Let’s add some contours for our terrain map of Jotunheimen. We can use a GDAL command, gdal_contour, to create vector contour lines from a DEM: gdal_contour -a height jotunheimen.tif jotunheimen_contour_25m.shp -i 25.0 The resulting shapefile has an attribute named “height” (-a) containing the elevation of each contour line. The contour interval, the difference in elevation between successive contour lines, is 25 meters (-i). Let's render the contour lines with Mapnik (jotunheimen_contours.xml): We can use Nik2Img to create an image from the Mapnik XML file: nik2img.py jotunheimen_contours.xml jotunheimen_contours.png -d 4096 4096 --projected-extent 460000 6810000 470000 6820000 Contour lines for Besseggen mountain ridge I want to render the contour lines differently for various zoom levels. The contours should be more visible at higher zoom levels, and we should add numbers showing the actual elevation for some of the contours. I also want to make the contour lines for every 100 meters thicker. To achieve this we need to know the map scale at different zoom levels. In the last blog post, we calculated the resolution (meters per pixel) for each zoom level. You get the map scale by dividing this number by 0.00028 (234.375 / 0.00028 = 837053.571). Zoom Resolution Scale 0 234.375 837054 1 117.1875 418527 2 58.59375 209263 3 29.296875 104632 4 14.6484375 52316 For zoom level 4, the map scale is about 1:50,000. Read more about map scale on this excellent Mapnik page. Let’s create a style rule that will display the elevation on a contour line on zoom level 3: If you look at the table above, the only scale number between the max and min scale denominator is 104632, which corresponds to zoom level 3. jotunheimen_contours2.xml includes all the style rules to render the contour lines differently for five zoom levels. You’ll also see that I’ve created contour shapefiles with contour intervals of 25, 100, 200 and 500 meters, - to be able to render these differently. Finally, I've used TileCache to render transparent tiles with contours, and added them as a separate layer to Leaflet map: Fullscreen map

Blind contour drawing Students draw 6-7 blind contour drawings of various objects, people or body parts. Various-sized boundaries are drawn around each drawing using cropping L's, activating the format (subject matter is touching at least 3 sides of the format), paying attention to the composition and focal point created in each image. 1 or 2 favorite drawings are chosen by the student and shapes are colored in using black (sharpie), white (paper), and gray (pencil). Line drawing is transferred onto larger canvas (proportional to format) for painting. Image is painted in acrylic following plan from drawing. Medium: sketches- pencil, sharpie. painting- acrylic on canvas. Drawing with format and black, white and gray. Completed painting. Size: approx. 14 x 17"

Contour line is a big part of Art. Whether we are talking about form, perspective, eye level. Many artist use contour line as part of their main focus. See below. Find 3 objects that you know you can draw. They can be around the room, pictures from Internet, or shapes you pull from your head. 2. Draw the outside shapes of the objects. Define the space with a horizontal line dividing background from foreground. 3. Use contour lines on the object. This can be contour in 1 direction or cross contour going both ways (more challenging). Usually, the Center (eye level) should be a straight line. As the shape goes outward from center, lines gradually change to match the outer line. 4. Color using color theory to add emphasis: Warm and Cool Primary and Secondary Complimentary Colors. STEP BY STEP visuals 1 &2. 3. 4. You can color solid with lighter colors. then go over them with darker analogous colors to add pattern. Watch these videos below to get your mind on seeing in Contour Line and understanding Cross Contour line.

Line Portraits This project has so many options for variation! I began this project with inspiration from two artists, Lui Ferreyra, and Kris Trappeniers. Lui Ferreyra is an artists who works largely in portraiture and his fragmented prismatic portraits are absolutely beautiful! The other artist we looked at is a Belgian based artist named Kris Trappeniers. He creates these wonderful continuous line portraits and sometimes even with extreme patience and precision cuts them out with an X-acto knife. For this project, we began by practicing out continuous line drawing skills. Many times students feel this is a most difficult task as they want to pick up their pencil, especially whilst drawing a portrait. I had them look at a simple contour line drawing of a face and complete a practice drawing of that face using a continuous line. After our continuous line practice, we ventured into the proportions of the face. We looked at a video from youtube showcasing the proportions when drawing a side profile view face. Next I gave them a tutorial on how to draw the proportions of a face in a frontal view. Once we have practiced with proportion and continuous line we talk about the options students have for their project and the materials they might need to complete it. Materials: Pencil Paper (white, brown, watercolor etc) Colored pencils, paint, marker, etc Sharpie (optional) Magazines for collage (optional) Requirements: Students must choose a photograph of a person to be able to draw a portrait from observation ( itcould be someone they know, themselves or an image from someone on the internet) Students must consider proportion when drawing their portrait. Students must utilize continuous line in some way on their artwork (on the portrait itself or in the background) Students must utilize some sort of color. Options: Create a background utilizing sharpie, watercolor, collage or any other type of material. Extension activity: Students can utilize Google Drawings, or even Google Slides to create the following extension project. Students will begin by saving a photo of a person and uploading it into whichever platform they are using (slides or drawings) Using the scribble tool, they will create continuous lines on and around the face and neck of their chosen portrait. The continuous line should intersect in different areas over the face to create new shapes. Using the line tool, students will select different colors and create repeated lines in each space on the face that was created by continuous line. Students are currently working on this project but please check back for more student examples :)
