Explore Feb 6, 2001 #260 Check out the feet! Look like they're inflated! Couldn't stop laughing when I caught sight of them and scrambled to get this shot. The American Coot (Fulica americana) is a bird of the family Rallidae, inhabiting wetlands and open water bodies. About 16 inches (40 cm) in length and weighing 1.4 lb (0.65 kg), adults have a short thick white bill and white frontal shield, which usually has a reddish-brown spot near the top of the bill between the eyes. From up close, a dark band can be distinguished at the bill tip. The body is gray with the head and neck darker than the rest of the body. Their legs are yellowish with wide scalloped toes rather than webbed feet which are useful for paddling and running across the surface of ponds to reach takeoff speed. Their chicks have black bodies with bright red head and beak, and orange plumes around the neck. The call is a high-pitched squeaking honk somewhat like a goose's but more hollow sounding. Anyone who’s fed ducks at a local lake will have seen coots - the small grey-black waterbirds that compete so energetically for the ducks’ bread.
Foulque macroule - Eurasian Coot by AlainChappuis http://ift.tt/2naCnbh
Eurasian Coots are another very common waterbird of lakes, reservoirs, ponds and slow-moving rivers, with a very similar distribution to Moorhens. In the UK they are resident but their numbers are swelled in winter by birds that have migrated from further north. They are sometimes confused with Moorhens but are easily distinguished by their white bill and head-shield, larger more rounded body with no white markings, and more aggressive behaviour - Moorhens are rather shy and retiring in comparison. If you get a look at the feet too, they are also very different - Moorhen toes are long, slim and yellow-green, but Coot toes are long and pale grey with big lobes. The juvenile plumage is grey-brown, with a paler breast and throat. Eurasian Coot, ©Ekaterina Papchinskaya, via Flickr Creative Commons. Eurasian Coot painting. Chris said that if I was doing a Coot I would have to find a picture with the amazing feet on show, so here you go. Don't think I've ever spent so long painting feet! Also I usually try to avoid outlining things, but with no background the bill would have disappeared completely so I've done a subtle outline. All in all, I'm quite happy with it :o)
