About Vintage Copeland Parian Figures, Young England & His Sister. A very good pair of Copeland figures, Parian Ware, entitled 'Young England' and 'Young England's Sister'. Both figures cast by the sculptor George Halse. Young England is seen reading a book with a cricket bat resting behind him, whilst his sister is holding a book and pencil with a croquet mallet and ball behind her. found on their bases 'Young England, Copeland M91, Copyright Reserved, G. Halse Sc' & 'Young England.s Sister, Copeland N96, Copyright Reserved'. 'Parian' is the name now used for a form of porcelain developed in England in the early 1840's essentially designed to imitate carved marble. It is a high quality unglazed porcelain, a type of bisque porcelain, prepared in a liquid form and cast in a mould. This was at the time when large marble statues and busts were common in Stately Homes and this was an affordable way for people to bring into their homes smaller scale copy. Copeland called their Parian wares 'Statuary Porcelain', Minton used 'Parian' in reference to the fine white marble from the Greek Island of Paros and Wedgwood called their wares 'Carrara' after the fine Italian marble.

Some information about the history and manufacturing of these plates: Starting in about 1894 the pattern was printed in cobalt blue with a white Gadroon (rope) rim which became very popular. The production of Tower by Spode ceased completely with the closure of the factory in 2009. Tower pattern was introduced c1814 and was derived from a printed illustration in the book by Merigot ‘Views of Rome and its Vicinity’ published c1796-1798. Tower depicts the Bridge of Salaro, near Rome. The bridge which originally had a keep built on top of it survives although it is now underneath the main route leading out of Rome to the airport. The Tower pattern was printed in a variety of colors during its almost 200 year production history but particularly in blue and later in pink. The original pattern was transfer printed in medium blue which is pale. In about 1860 it was produced in a darker, ‘flowing’ blue known as Royal Saxon blue or flow blue.
