IN ENGLISH Docks, Rumex-family, are interesting plants from dyers point of view. There are about two hundred different species around the world and they have been know for dyeing at least in South and North America, Tibet and Africa. Most often the old recipes use roots of docks to dye oranges and reds, but sometimes also leaves were used to dye yellow. Roots of docks contain flavonoids (yellows), several different anthraquinones (oranges and reds), tannins and also organic iron, which acts as a mordant and saddens the colors. Usually roots have been used with a metallic mordant, alum, because this way the color became more saturated. Dock roots have been used to get black with iron mordant in Scotland and Ireland. Scottish Su Grierson tells in her book The Colour Cauldron about her experiments with the seed heads of Broad leaved dock, Rumex obtusifolius, and Curled dock, Rumex crispus. She boiled the seeds for several hours in several days, until the bath was red, and got "Oxblood Red" or "Dull Pompeian Red", which she says are similar to colors from madder. These seed heads were collected in September, and when she had collected seeds later in November she got only brown. This has interested me for a long time and now this summer some docks started to flower (I didn't have time to dig them away in time), so I let them grow seeds to try for dyeing. Docks growing in my garden as weeds are Northern dock, Rumex longifolius, or hybrids with it and Curly dock. Luckily (for my garden) there were only a few of them, and I have never gotten enough of their roots to try as a dye (the first year dock roots are quite small, and I haven't allowed them to grow bigger, maybe I should just to experiment, but it is quite a bad weed if it gets rampant..). Docks can be quite common weed in abandoned fields. The picture of my dock was taken in the end of July and about a week from that in August I cut the seed heads and ripped off the seeds and put them to soak. I added some washing soda to the bath to raise the pH. Alkaline soak helps to get reds from rhubarb roots or buckthorn bark (see Jenny Dean's book The Heritage of Colour), so I thought it might help also with docks because the dyes in them are similar. The bath turned to red already during soaking, and I let it soak for a month. During the soaking the pH had dropped to neutral. I then boiled the seeds for four hours and strained the bath next day. The picture below is from that dark red bath. IN ENGLISH I had 250grams of dry seeds, and I dyed 100grams of alum and cream of tartar mordanted yarn, plus small bits of unmordanted and tanninmordanted control yarns. I dyed for an hour and let the yarns cool down in the bath and soak more for couple of hours. Yarn looked very red while in bath and it seemed to me that the color became deeps in the next few days. IN ENGLISH After a weeks soaking I took the yarn away from the bath and washed it. The color became much ligher once out of the bath, but after couple of rinsings the water ran clear. Most likely I had too much yarn compared to the amount of seeds, next time I will be wiser. The bath is still very red, and I will try to dye with it again. As a color this is not very special, but this was a nice experiment which still left things to discover, and it came from a common weed. Also anthraquinones and tannins from docks are light- and washfast colors.
