Work continues apace on our new ruleset, Black Powder, which is set in the Horse & Musket period of 1700-1900. We hope to have news of publishing dates before too long but until then here’s a sneaky peek at one of the great pieces of artwork the remarkable Peter Dennis has produced for us. This...

You are what hope looks like to the Piping Plover. The Piping Plover faces a triple threat of human disturbance, coastal development, and climate-change induced rising sea levels. But you can safeguard their hopeful future, and protect all vulnerable birds. This week your gift will be matched up to $15,000. Please give now, when your generosity will have double the bird-saving power. Photo: Lorraine Minns/Audubon Photography Awards

A virtuous woman is a woman of faith, integrity, grace, and humility. Becoming a Proverbs 31 woman isn't about being perfect or checking off a list. It's about abiding in Christ and living life with purpose.

“I don’t want to come to the U.S. Everyone hates us here.” The words stunned me. I was face-to-face with a woman who had just crossed the border from

Curator Anne Umland talks about the life and work of surrealist painter Rene Magritte. The exhibition “Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary” is on view at MoMA through January 12.
Nick Riley finished a day plowing, and picked up a hitchhiker on a Tuesday afternoon in 1977. The man was a serial killer, who had just murdered a taxi driver--he held Riley and his wife, Bernice, overnight in their home, then took Riley for a 3-day marathon drive on the backroads of Eastern Oregon, (look three photos back, for my own story of my mindless pursuit)--taking two more hostages, changing cars several times, and killing one of his captives, 75-year-old Mary Lindsay, a rural rancher from Ione, Oregon, who angered Olds when she tried to talk to him about God and salvation. "I never argued with him, and that kept me alive," said Nick, who made it home Friday, three days after his abduction, and was greeted by Bernice with a crab dinner, his favorite. He was amused by all the flowers that had been sent to his home by well-wishers--"when I think of all nice treatment I'm going to get the rest of my life...you don't know how sweet life is." Riley and hostage Grace Davis, were released in Salt Lake City when Olds boarded a Greyhound bus--but they were so intimidated that they kept a promise not to call police until they returned home--so Olds got a half day start. He was finally captured in Philadelphia, with another hostage. He is now serving a life sentence in the state prison in Salem OR. Crime novelist Ann Rule wrote of Old's troubled teenage years and murders in "Rage to Kill". Waiting for Old's "perp walk" in the county courthouse, I could see the TV camera lights were bright, and adding my strobe would be too much--so I took it off. But the TV crew was caught by surprise when the elevator door opened, and Olds--in a prison jump suit and draped in chains, sprung toward the camera crew like a Tasmanian devil. My shots were underexposed, (since I'd made my settings on the expectation of the TV lights--back before automatic camera settings--). They would've been great--the feral Olds, startled sheriff's deputies, and the freaked-out TV guy--all scuffling. On later assignments, death threats had been made against Olds, and security was severe, with police snipers staked out, scanning rooftops for members of the family of the slain cab driver, who'd vowed revenge. You weren't sure where the bullets might come from, and whether you'd have a Jack Ruby moment at any second. Olds is now a 72 year old man, still serving his life sentence at the state pen in Salem OR. I've covered many "Lifer's Club" events, but haven't met up with Mr. Olds since that heated manhunt in '77. Nick and Bernice Riley lived happily ever after, in Pendleton, enjoying a peaceful and uneventful retirement. I eventually left Pendleton for Portland, where I still reside, a half hours drive north of Old's cell. Outlaw Man
There are many possible forms and shapes that spiritual messages appear to us. However, hearing a knock is one of the most frequent and important. It could have tremendous spiritual meaning, and you should never
Santa Claus reportedly began his pipe-smoking days back in 1823. According to RPGpundit, Santa has "many tastes when it comes to pipes," and has been enjoying tobacco for quite some time, presumably to keep warm in his workshop at the North Pole. Norman Rockwell (1894 - 1978) had a way of capturing the essence of a moment. Here, as he meticulously draws his self-portrait, his pipe makes it into the painting but his glasses do not! Funny how we see ourselves: pipe = yes; glasses = no way! Bob Hope (1903 - 2003) lived to the ripe old age of 100. Humor really is good medicine! Desi Arnaz (1917 - 1986) founded Desilu Productions, with his wife, famous comedian, Lucille Ball, and helped pioneer some of the most sensational comedic moments to have ever hit the TV screen. Evelyn (Arthur St. John) Waugh (1903 - 1966) had a high degree of sophistication and caustic wit, which he displayed in a highly polished, deceptively simple prose. He is credited with saying, "Punctuality is the virtue of the bored." Mark Twain (1835 - 1910) said that ceasing smoking was the easiest thing he ever did. "I ought to know because I've done it a thousand times." My favorite pipe smoker is René Magritte (1898 - 1967) who's iconic pipe painting, Ceci n'est pas un pipe (This is not a pipe) is the ultimate comedic masterpiece. Magritte inspired my own comedic spin... Famous Pipe Smoking quotes... "If you must smoke, take your butt outside." ~ Author Unknown "To smoke or not to smoke: I can make of either a life-work." ~Mignon "The best way to stop smoking is to just stop - no ifs, ands or butts." ~Edith Zittler "Smoking helps you lose weight - one lung at a time!" ~Alfred E. Neuman (Mad Magazine)
