St Brevita, Lanlivery, Cornwall Some background information: According to the English poet, writer and broadcaster John Betjeman the parish church of St Brevita in the little Cornish village of Lanlivery is "one of the great churches of Cornwall". No one knows when the first holy building was placed in this spot but in the 1990s archeologists found the remains of a Norman tower from the 11th century. However the circular enclosure of the ancient churchyard suggests that it was already an important site in pre-Christian times. Although today the patron saint is St Brevita, there is no mention of him in earlier histories. Initially the church was named after the almost unknown St Vorck instead. Hence the village’s name Lanlivery is derived from "Lan-le-Vorck", which means St Vorck’s holy place, softened by usage into the modern name. As far back as 1162, Lanlivery Church was mentioned in a document and again in 1281. So the present church, built in the 14th century, obviously stands on the site of an earlier Christian church, which used to be the mother church of the chapels in Lostwithiel and Luxulyan. St Brevita has one of the finest granite towers in Cornwall. Built in the 15th century (together with the south aisle), it houses an excellent peal of eight bells. The largest of them weighs 17 hundredweights. With a height of almost 100 feet (ca. 30.5 metres) the church tower is also one of the highest, being visible for some distance along the Ridgeway route south towards Fowey. It is also reputed that in earlier times its southern face was whitened with limewash to act as a landmark for sailing ships entering Fowey harbour. A huge, painted wooden plaque in the bell tower bears a message of thanks from Charles the First to the parishioners of Lanlivery for their support during the Civil War. And a recent visitors’ book bears the signature of the present Prince Charles, whose wife Camilla Mountbatten-Windsor was created Duchess of Cornwall.
