Traveling as a couple isn't always easy. Discover 10 essential couple travel tips that will help you have an unforgettable couple vacation
The tearful young woman looks longingly at the empty luggage carousel while her partner wrings his hands in distress. Their couples getaway is not getting off to a great start. The heated argument in a restaurant as a husband exclaims his idea of an anniversary holiday is not having spa seaweed on his face for three hours. The vision of couple travel may be one of magical romance with rainbows glimmering in the backdrop. However the reality of of making travel together work for both partners is just that. Work. Having been married for 38 years we admittedly have made most every mistake imaginable in couples travel. Romantic getaways turned sour, becoming hopelessly lost in a foreign city, losing a passport; we have left few pages unread in the what not to do on the road book. We are often asked how we do it. “You always look like you are having so much fun!” Be assured couples travel is not all pristine beaches and gazing at perfect sunsets with an umbrella drink in hand. A couples vacation can be a dream trip of a lifetime or potentially a nightmare difficult to forget. Here are some of our top learnings as a couple traveling together over the decades. Table of Contents Toggle 10 Tried and Tested Couple Travel Tips Are you on the same page of the couple travel itinerary? Laughing is usually the best medicine What makes your partner anxious? Trains, planes and other things you should be early for Couple travel pre-game huddle before the big event We think long flights, especially at night, deteriorate our common sense brain cells. We once got off a plane and accepted a ride from the first person who offered with absolutely no ID indicating he had a taxi service. Is the GPS up and running? Pack light and then take less on your couples trip If you must check luggage….. Couple travel key – Be kind and be a strong team Accept your strengths and weaknesses 10 Tried and Tested Couple Travel Tips Are you on the same page of the couple travel itinerary? Is your idea of a best trip for couples a backpacking adventure? Does your partner think a five star all inclusive beach resort is the ultimate couples vacation? The idea of a spontaneous trip for couples oozes with romance. Just throw a dart at the map and whisk away where all will be sunshine and serenity. If both of you share that go-with-the-flow attitude, and we mean deep down in the bottom of your gut share it, not just because you think it would be fun to be that kind of person, then go for it. For us planning, talking and then planning and talking a bit more takes the exclamation mark of stress out of the equation. You may think your partner will be joyous at the idea of camping on a deserted beach off the grid. So romantic right? Unless one of you isn’t keen on three gallons of sand in your sleeping bag and the spiders that want to share your romantic vacation. A cycling tour may not be the perfect couples holiday but how about those views? Laughing is usually the best medicine “Make laughter the soundtrack of your marriage,” suggests Dave Willis. Some of our funniest stories are those that in real time were distressing. There was the time in Jamaica when Sue convinced Dave, whose hip flexibility resembles that of an oak tree, to give horse riding a try. The man can run like a gazelle however bends as well as a broomstick. A test of marriage as the horse proceeded to spend several hours trying to leave Dave on the jungle floor. Barely able to walk for a day or two Sue soothed the issue with Jamaican Red Stripe beer. Then we did what we do best thirty-five years in, we laughed and laughed. What makes your partner anxious? Any of you reading who are in a relationship can likely give examples of things you do that irritate your partner. On the road those habits are often magnified by the stress of unfamiliar surroundings. Be sensitive to your partner’s needs. Perhaps some extra quiet time for those who love to read even if you would prefer to chat up every stranger on the beach. How about hanging up your clothes rather than displaying them on the furniture for your travel companion who like things neat and tidy. Photo credit Wendy Baker Photography Trains, planes and other things you should be early for Missing a flight connection can turn what should be a best holiday for couples into a stress festival. ” I told you we didn’t have enough time when you insisted on booking this flight!” “Well I wanted us to have more alone time! We only have 2 days for our romantic weekend!” The next time you are in an airport look at the face of a person running to catch their flight. That is not a grin of euphoria but rather a gritting of teeth of I-had-no-idea-security-would-be-so-backed-up runner tries to keep his lungs from exploding out of his sprinting body. Always be earlier than you think you should be for every plane, train, bus, shuttle and tour. Better to have some relaxing conversation waiting to board then to argue over who caused the late arrival. Couple travel pre-game huddle before the big event We think long flights, especially at night, deteriorate our common sense brain cells. We once got off a plane and accepted a ride from the first person who offered with absolutely no ID indicating he had a taxi service. Once on our way in an unfamiliar city the reality that we were in a stranger’s vehicle brought forth vision of us being stabbed in a dark alley and our valuables stolen. Thankfully all we endured was a very long and scenic route to our destination from an unregistered driver. Now before we disembark any plane, train or boat following a journey we do our pre-game huddle. What is the plan? Where are we headed? Who will we or won’t we speak to? Australia’s Great Ocean Road Is the GPS up and running? The doors barely close in the rental car in a foreign city and Dave starts the ignition. Sue madly juggles maps and GPS settings. “Should I go right or left?” The question comes rapid fire from the on-your-mark-get-set-go driver. A very loud eyeball roll accompanies an irritated reply from the navigator, ” I’d tell you but I don’t even have a destination loaded in the GPS!” This recurring eyeball bulging scene is one of our most tested travel tips for couples. Know where you are going. Flying by the seat of your pants rarely works on a unfamiliar freeway, let alone a highway where the driving occurs on the opposite side of the road. Pack light and then take less on your couples trip There is no doubt that packing carry-on luggage for your travels takes some practice and planning. However not as much effort as dealing with an insurance policy when your suitcase is never found, vanishing into thin air over the Pacific Ocean. You may be headed to the best vacation spot for couples imaginable however worrying what adventure your luggage is on will take the glow off of the most glorious couples destination. If you are a traveler with all the time in the world then delayed luggage may not be a big deal to you. We watched a couple on our cycling tour wait anxiously for their missing luggage not knowing if they would have to depart without their riding gear. A distressing turn of events when one travels half way around the world for a biking trip. If you must check luggage….. We understand that there are those of you no matter how many packing tips we share that feel carry-on is not possible. At the very least carry on everything essential that you cannot replace including valuables. Split you clothes into two checked bags so should you lose one at least you will each have outfits to wear on arrival to your couples travel destination. Couple travel key – Be kind and be a strong team Although we have traveled a great deal, each excursion seems to include a story of panic or at the least regret, when one of our articles goes missing. Through kindness of strangers, pure luck or painstaking detective work, the naughty item usually is found following an adventurous foray of some description or another. The fact that we almost always travel with carry-on only luggage makes this pattern more of a mystery. Surely those small numbers of packed articles should form some kind of cooperative and keep a close watch on each other. Instead they seem to have developed a spontaneous extreme adventure team where each demands a turn at ‘How-to-give-travelers-a-panic-attack-while-on-the-road’ game. We take turns in losing items. Everything from a passport to a shoe has gone missing in our travel together. Kindness toward each other and brainstorming solutions is far better than something like “Well where did you leave it?” A couple travel high – Sydney Bridge Climb Accept your strengths and weaknesses Take a deep breath and admit that you don’t know everything. Whether in day to day life or in any of the places to travel as a couple, each of you bring strengths to the adventure of life. In our travel together we constantly see couples arguing about who is right or wrong about the smallest of details. The best holidays for couples typically aren’t made by the destination but rather by the interaction.
