Artist Peter Hunt was known for his colorful peasant-style folk-art paint designs. He insisted that everyone - even people who couldn't draw a straight line - could create these whimsical designs, using the simple techniques he explains here.

The other day I was scrolling through Pinterest, as you do, and came across this photo . Of course the link was broken, causing me to become obsessive. I scoured the website trying to find the tutorial on how to make the delightfully rustic looking DIY sponge thing of my dreams but alas, no luck. S
This sculpture was made from reclaimed books that would have otherwise been thrown away. But look! They can have a second life...as something utterly captivating. What could be better than having your favorite stories immortalized forever and hanging on your wall? What if the words that helped define and shape your life could be forever felt with their essence locked into a sculpture? When you install this artwork in your home...people will gravitate towards it. Is it fabric? Is it water? Woodland mushrooms? What IS it? They'll want to touch it, to make sure it is real. No one has ever seen anything like it. What is that I see? Beethoven? Handel? Kayne? Is that a handwritten note on a page? Its the most amazing thing to look at from afar as well as up close. This piece was roughly 4 feet high x 4 feet wide. The interior is comprised of various different sizes of books, between 5.5" all the way down to 2" inches depth and was created for a specific place in the client's home in Chicago. You may send me the dimensions you would prefer. All sculptures are custom created. I incorporated books that represented her family: music! I can use your old books or look for specific titles as well. This buyer wanted a square-ish sculpture. Each page is folded, tipped, quilled, wrapped, rolled, pulled by my two hands, for a very intricate unique, artist-led design. Your artwork's patterns and layers will emerge organically and will be incomparable to any other sculpture I create or anything that can be bought elsewhere. A beautiful, custom wooden crate is crafted around the sculpture and it is suspended within for safe travel to your desired destination. The entire shipment will have a scheduled delivery (you get to schedule it) and it weighs 150-250 pounds, depending on size (the sculpture alone will weigh less but still be 100-150 pounds). These are both massively heavy and delicate. Never was there such a fun paradox! Unboxing and Hanging Suggestions will be sent after purchase and most customers hang themselves with 2-3 friends to assist with a simple drill and screws. People have hung them on anything from Florida plaster to drywall with wood studs to concave stairwells to drywall with metal studs, etc. Handmade in my studio, on a little southeast barrier island in the USA. Inspiration comes from my micro-homestead, the woods, the salt marshes I travel over and the salty sea we frequent weekly. Designers & Curators please contact me with any questions. I'm so EXCITED!!! It's time for the yearly party of Where Bloggers Create hosted by Karen Valentine at My Dessert Cottage. Karen has spent YEARS hosting this awesome party and I am now in my 4th year of joining. Thank you for stopping by and browsing through my creative space. My dress form, Nadine, will be joining us for the photos to 'help' me show off the collections of laces, vintage sewing items, and pretties that I love. Nadine is excited to be a part of the photo shoot this year, and has dressed up in a vintage pink lace two-piece outfit. The upper shirtwaist attaches to the skirt with hooks and eyes all the way around. We decided she would look better with a lovely vintage swiss dot apron that was gifted to me from a special lady to help hide the imperfections in the dress. (Nadine loves chocolate and her hands being what they are, well, alas, it was quite a mess ; ) ) Also, Nadine wouldn't be seen without her huge pearls, so on they went! (hiding more chocolate stains I presume). Vintage glove boxes and divided boxes play a huge part in helping me keep my collection of laces and trims organized. They also look gorgeous! The tray under the glove boxes is from an old trunk that had seen better days. I have it filled with more laces and lovelies. The north window is on this wall making a wonderful light for most of the day. The floral containers in the bottom of the cabinet are from Michaels, and they are perfect for storing more laces and trims (what else??). They fit perfectly with my decor, and I love the ease of use. I may need some more of these!! You can see the hutch (it's PINK!!) that I have placed on top of an old drop leaf coffee table that now houses some of my sewing box collection. I fell in love with it, and so of course, I had to have it! The child's sewing machines are so cute up here! And the old tin roof panel is a lovely background for them. Turning the corner is the east window where I have hung the sheerest white vintage dresses that I have started collecting. I can't believe it when I find some of these. Aren't they so sweet? My sewing machine is covered in a plain pillowcase so I can easily access it. I love using old or re-purposed jars for some of my laces and sewing items. They make a lovely display, don't cost much (garage sales!!), and allow me to see what I have. Small glass dishes and pitchers also make lovely containers for showing off pretty collections! (By the way, I showed this post to my husband before it went live, and when he saw the picture above, he called these spools of thread....THREAD KABOBS!! ) Making the next turn, Nadine is showing you the work table made from nothing more than a solid door that is sitting on plastic drawers. I've covered the lower part with a garage sale find curtain originally made for a baby's crib. I cut it to fit my two desks, added a bit of old lace curtain found at a garage sale as well, and find that although beautiful and unifying for the room, it is difficult to access the drawers and storage beneath. I may be removing them in the future. I work here the most and LOVE how easy it is to be inspired. Keeping my favorite things in view seems to give me the most enjoyment. It sometimes gets a bit difficult to locate certain items, but seriously, I always find what I'm looking for! There are gifts from sweet friends over the years included with my collections, and I am always reminded of generous and lovely friendships I've made. Sending hugs to each of YOU!! NADINE!!! You silly girl!! CUT THAT OUT!!!! This is where I keep all my little spice jars of buttons and baubles. Lots of baubles!! And this is also where the BEST of the laces and appliques live. Oh getting tired now are we?? This lace book was a wonderfully fun project that I made earlier this year. I think I had EVERY piece of lace I own OUT and I went through ALL my buttons and baubles too. What FUN!!! I love certain color groups more than others, but generally, the pastels are my faves. I love pink and cream together, so my shelves display lots of colors but usually lean towards the pastels. In the picture above, I have a little square purple sachet with a heart embroidered on it that I made when I was in grade school! Items from my Grossmutter, Birth mother, close friends and loved ones are special to me, so I have them displayed to enjoy. I love to read, therefore bookcases have been used a lot in my craft space. But I've managed to put the books in other rooms of my house making more CRAFT storage!!! And I still have more room for more LACE!! So now you're exhausted??? Get out of my chair!!! This is a dress form that is a Barr product of molded plastic, mod podged with copies of music from the internet! I had a blast making this and LOVE the way she adds a touch of class to my craft room. She is wearing vintage lace bridal pieces, the yoke being a gorgeous piece that I found on the internet. The pearl and lace cap is one of my favorite pieces. Well I say Nadine, jealousy does NOT become you!!! Pouty thing!! Well, I hope that you will forgive her obtuseness! I'm sure she will come around in a moment or two. As I finish up the tour, I'd like to thank each of you for coming by to visit me! I had so much fun getting my room ready for you to see. Please have a look at the rest of my blog if you like what you've seen. And be sure and go visit Karen's blog here to see the rest of the participants in the party! Thank you Karen for all your work and for making the party a yearly activity that we all look forward to!!! All smiles now!! I am off to visit all of your rooms and spaces now!!! Hugs and blessings to you!!! Doni
Welcome! I hope you all can handle the rambling of a busy yet excited lady! We recently moved, and although our new home is wonderful, the unpacking is taking forever! But I have worked hard to get my craft room ready for the party, and here it is! Thank you Karen Valentine for hosting Where Bloggers Create again this year! You can find all the party list at her blog here. I have also started a You Tube channel where you can find many of my projects. Please visit me here. And for the video tour of my craft room click here. As I looked at the piles of boxes the movers left in this room, a basement, all I could think of was: I'll never be ready for next year's Where Bloggers Create Party!! But I started. With the walls! The walls here are of rough cut wood...splinters and all! So, I covered them...with the pages from an old falling apart Bible!! Then I added the shelves and got my tables put up. Lots of shelves and doilies! Because I use my craft room for different things, I have my things in different areas. The first group of pictures has shown my antique and vintage sewing notions and laces, sewing boxes and threads. The next part of my room is where I do a lot of gluing! I have my laces for making lace books and decorating over here: Got to have something pretty to look at for inspiration!! I lately began to organize these laces and trims using Fernlidesigns products. They are awesome! You can find my You Tube videos about this project here. My dress form, named Nadine, was none too happy to have to travel in a dark trailer for the LONG move!! I keep my projects that I'm working on in these decorated boxes, as well as lots of laces and doilies! And the table below is my cutting table. More boxes of laces, and lots of fabric for fun projects!! In between the two craft areas is my sewing machine. I've learned a lot in the months I've been working on my craft room. First, I have to let myself, that is ALLOW myself, to make changes. I know that sounds weird, but that's the way I work. If I think of one way to organize and it really doesn't work, I need to be able to let it go. Do it another way. And with time (that's another thing...knowing it will take time to work out the glitches), it WILL all get put together the way I can best utilize it. Second, I have to take TIME...already mentioned. It takes actual time spent crafting to know where something best works. If I need to be able to access a drawer with tools in it, then that drawer needs to be handy. If my materials are a long way across the room, then I probably won't want to get up, go over there, and use them. Time wasted, inspiration gone. Organizing is great, but UTILIZING the space is for the best functioning of the space, and the best use of my TIME! Third, It's OK to change things around even if you think it's set and ready to go. Case in point. A tall unit or rack that I own has been used to hold lots of fabric. Well, it doesn't fit into this space. Therefore, I have to figure out how to make the fabric fit in another way. I moved my upholstered chairs probably about 50 times! Yes! During the unpacking, yes for sure, but even since then. It doesn't make sense to put it where it is not functional and comfortable. Fourth, Make it Pretty!! When I start working on my space, I always have in my mind how I WANT it to look. When that doesn't happen, I work with it until it is pleasing to my senses. If a space needs to be covered, then pull out a curtain rod, rope, whatever works, and MAKE it look good. Spray paint covers a lot of ugly too! Fifth, Have fun. Enjoy looking through each and every box or jar at all your saved pieces. Familiarize yourself anew with what you have on hand. Put it out, pack it up, whatever, but enjoy this process. And you'll probably need to realize that it will change again. Needs change, favorites change, sometimes we just need it to be CHANGED! That's OK. Giving myself permission again to change things. Seems like that's all I do! So, after all the effort put into it, I can finally say, I love it. It's time to get busy! I hope you each have a spot to call your own! It can be a whole room, or it can be a small spot, but make it YOURS. Make it fun, make it inspirational to YOU. You're the one going to be using it after all! Thank you for taking the time to look through my craft room! Blessings, Doni
