The Torrazzo of Cremona, located next to the cathedral, is the symbol of the city of Lombardy. It is the tallest tower historic Italy, second only to that of the Cathedral of Mortlake, in the province of Udine, however, built in concrete in the twentieth century. From a plaque at the base of Torrazzo it reads the height (250 arms and two ounces of Cremona, which is about 110 meters). For more precise measurements we know that in reality is 112.27 meters high with a total of 502 steps. Archaeological excavations conducted in the early eighties of the twentieth century have shown that the presence of structures below the tower to reconnect to a cemetery located near the ancient cathedral or structures Roman antecedents. Popular tradition has its first building in the 754. There were still four phases in the development of the construction of the tower: the third decade of the thirteenth century to the fourth phase represented by the marble spire (garland) completed by 1309 (see photo). In Torrazzo, on the fourth floor was later added to one of the largest astronomical clocks of mondo.Costruito by Francesco and Giovan Battista Divizioli (father and son) between the years 1583-1588 the clock represents the sky with the constellations of the zodiac crossed by the motion of the Sun and the Moon.
