Having recently had an opportunity to poke through some of the Lyons Collection of 19th century type that Dave Greer released to Mass College of Art, I noted with curiosity a galley containing a font of rusted 10 line ornamented type made from steel. Still more recently I was grabbing a cord from this ancient box on the basement shelf and it struck me; of course stamping on wood could be done with nothing other than steel type. Any other material would simply wear out under the punishing pressure required.
