There are times I'm critisized for taking informal portraits or street photography images of the poorest of the poor. I get it. It's something that many feel is opportunistic and wrong. I would like to let those critics know that it's not easy for me to drum up the courage to approach these unfortunate souls and ask to take their picture. It's much easier to walk past the homeless, pretend not to see them and avoid making eye contact. My hope and reason for imaging them and sharing the results is to allow the viewer to look at what they often try to avoid, see into their eyes, witness their plight, and realize there is a soul associated with their face and body. If this picture, and the others I've taked of the homeless, motivates one person to provide food, assistance, or some form of care to these individuals, then my efforts, however uncomfortable they might be for some to observe, are not in vain and worth the unease I feel when I decide to image and share such images.
