A ruined medieval Church which was dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, St. Batholomew & St. Guthlac in the 8th Century. The original building was burnt down to the ground & the villagers murdered by the invading Danes. Through it's early history, it has been rebuilt & devastated by fire several times. The ruins were once the nave. The existing remains consist of the north aisle & are still very much used as a Parish Church. In fact, while I was there, a wedding was taking place. Crowland, Lincolnshire, is one of those towns that Britain does so well. It has a half-ruined abbey, a three-way medieval bridge, at least one decent tea and bun shop and was once home to a hermit.
