When Victoria Villasana (previously) lays a long stitch on a vintage photograph, she’s connecting the pattern or geometric shape to a piece of history, culture, or philosophy. The Mexican artist transforms found black-and-white images of cultural icons and historical figures through vibrant embroideries. Turquoise fibers radiate from Nelson Mandela’s fist, a gold, chevron collar lines Chadwick Boseman’s shirt, and Yayoi Kusma sports a multicolor garment with varying dots and stripes. More
I was at the Coconut Grove Art Festival this weekend. A couple of pieces caught my eye. I was being exceptionally lazy and did not grab either the artists name or the title of the work.
This contemporary canvas print of one of my original African art paintings is the perfect living room wall art. It would also brighten up the other rooms in your home and is a suitable and thoughtful gift for any occasion. This trendy art piece is inspired by my love of African masks, Jamaican art, Black art and modern home decor . I combine African and Jamaican themes into all of my art and I give each one a name and story that shows this influence. This is Passa Passa which means "Mix up, Mix up" in Jamaican Patois. The various themes in this painting with its straight lines, curved line, wiggly lines, and dots looks like it's straight out of Africa or the Caribbean. This is an eye-turner that will make a perfect gift for a special friend or family member. About The Artwork Party Time. My acrylic on canvas painting. 22 x 28 inches Two robust women dressed in their best on their way to a party. When we are invited to a party, we usually carry along something yummy like jollof rice, plantain and fried chicken to add to the food largess. I had so much fun painting this based on memories of 60s fashion and our rugged red food warmer/cooler. Many Nigerians will instantly remember the cooler and knee length wrappers of yesteryears. The memory brings us much joy. The fashion is called iro (wrapper), buba (roomy blouse) and gele (headwrap) in Yoruba Language. Yoruba is spoken in West Africa especially south west Nigeria. The corn crop symbolizes fruitfulness and mirth. .... Ladies you look so good. .... I will ship this painting rolled in a tube. It will surely brighten up your living space and start happy conversations. Working with appropriated vintage photographs of artists, musicians, and politicians, Mexican textile artist Victoria Villasana applies a colorfully whimsical layer of embroidery atop each image. Criss-crosses of color and bright highlights around the eyes seem to lend a sense of empowerment to the works which often depict feminist icons from singer Nina Simone to artist Frida Kahlo. Villasana also takes her works into the streets and creates hybrid yarn bomb paste-ups from small stickers to entire murals. More
