The DBT House is a framework in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that allows clients to explore their inner world. This “inner world” — which includes their values, emotions, hopes, and coping strategies — is represented by a specific room or level of their metaphorical house. The DBT House Worksheet is an art-based activity that features two drawings of a house, and both houses have different sections or rooms. One drawing asks questions that serve as prompts for the client to explore an aspect of their life, while the other drawing lets them write down their answers. For example, the question “What values govern your life?” in the foundation of their DBT house might be answered with “courage and authenticity.” As kids and teens complete this activity, they can increase their self-awareness, which leads to improved emotional regulation and healthier relationships. If your child needs help identifying coping strategies for the chimney of their DBT house, this DBT Coping Skills bundle will give them ideas. *This item is an instant digital download. The DBT skill TIPP is an effective short-term strategy to help kids and teens learn how to quickly regulate their emotions and behavior. The purpose of distress tolerance skills is to assist clients in coping with emotional distress temporarily, and replace dysfunctional behaviors that could harm them. When practiced regularly, these skills improve over time and can be particularly helpful during highly stressful situations. The DBT TIPP Skills Worksheet asks clients to identify at least one TIPP skill to practice for the week in preparation for a crisis and reflect on their emotional triggers afterward. Furthermore, it asks them to write down the actual skills they used and rate the intensity of their emotions. This worksheet helps kids and teens to be mindful of their emotions over the week and helps them focus on a task or a situation without being overwhelmed. Caring adults can use this tool to help kids and teens focus on identifying and labeling emotions and help them clarify what they are feeling. It pairs nicely with our DBT TIPP Skills handout. *This item is an instant digital download. A link to download your files will be emailed to you once payment is confirmed. In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), thoughts, feelings, and emotions are not always reliable indicators of reality — they come and go depending on our beliefs, assumptions, and interpretations of events. Avoiding our emotions prolongs their impact, and checking the facts can help address emotional dysregulation. The DBT Check The Facts PDF handout starts by introducing “checking the facts” as an emotion regulation technique. Next, it presents six questions clients can ask themselves, such as the negative emotion they want to change and the event that triggered the emotion. This handout helps kids and teens check the facts of a situation, and change their emotions when they do not fit the facts or when acting on their emotions is not effective. They can pair this with our DBT Check The Facts Worksheet to explore their thoughts further and start practicing the skill. *This item is an instant digital download.
