Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is effective in treating adults and adolescents, and now it is being adapted for younger children. DBT is also described as a transdiagnostic treatment, which means that it can be applied across various psychiatric disorders. Research shows that among the different skills taught, mindfulness and distress tolerance are highly valuable to adolescents. The What Is DBT PDF handout offers valuable information on the nature of DBT, how it helps clients, one of its primary goals, and the skills training modules taught. It uses clear and simple language that’s accessible to younger clients as well as illustrations to hold their interest. This handout helps kids and teens appreciate the relevance of DBT skills in their everyday lives, especially outside of therapy sessions. Parents may set aside time to practice coping skills together, such as immersing themselves in the present moment (under the mindfulness module) and radical acceptance (under the distress tolerance module). Our DBT Skills Introduction handout is a helpful add-on for a 1-page overview of each of the core DBT modules - Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Walking The Middle Path. *This item is an instant digital download. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) helps people manage intense emotions by combining individual and group therapy with skills training and coaching.
Mindfulness is an essential component of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which involves observing the present moment and accepting it as it is. Research shows that mindfulness can be particularly beneficial for young people and families who are more likely to be exposed to long-term stress. The DBT What Is Mindfulness In DBT handout guides clients to learn what mindfulness entails — for example, it explains how mindfulness skills are used in all the other DBT skills, and how mindfulness takes practice. At the bottom of the handout, they’ll be introduced to two different types of mindfulness — narrow-focused attention and open-minded attention. Kids and teens who practice mindfulness, especially when facing various stressors, can develop resilience over time. After they use the handout, you can introduce various mindfulness exercises, such as mindful belly breathing and body scan meditation. Our DBT Mindfulness Skills handout is a helpful add-on for a detailed, 1-page overview of several mindfulness skills presented in DBT. *This item is an instant digital download. The DBT skill TIPP is an effective short-term strategy to help kids and teens learn how to quickly regulate their emotions and behavior. The purpose of distress tolerance skills is to assist clients in coping with emotional distress temporarily, and replace dysfunctional behaviors that could harm them. When practiced regularly, these skills improve over time and can be particularly helpful during highly stressful situations. The DBT TIPP Skills Worksheet asks clients to identify at least one TIPP skill to practice for the week in preparation for a crisis and reflect on their emotional triggers afterward. Furthermore, it asks them to write down the actual skills they used and rate the intensity of their emotions. This worksheet helps kids and teens to be mindful of their emotions over the week and helps them focus on a task or a situation without being overwhelmed. Caring adults can use this tool to help kids and teens focus on identifying and labeling emotions and help them clarify what they are feeling. It pairs nicely with our DBT TIPP Skills handout. *This item is an instant digital download. A link to download your files will be emailed to you once payment is confirmed.
