Edgar Degas was a French artist famous for his depictions of ballerinas. Degas also created bronze sculptures, but he was most well-known for his pastel drawings and oil paintings. Around 1860, Degas developed a fascination with dance, which he originally discovered at the Paris Opera. Nicknamed the “painter of dancers,” more than half of his works depict dancers either backstage or on stage. Although Degas was regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he preferred to be called a realist and never painted outdoors, as so many famous Impressionists did. Ballet dancers were one of Degas main subjects. Here are 8 of Edgar Degas magnificent artworks presenting the most beautiful ballerinas!
This is an acid free professional quality Giclee print of my original art work: 'Homage to Degas'. A real feast for Ballet lovers. The original is a painting using multiple delicate and transparent layers of acrylic, over vintage sheet music pages. The background collage also include torn segments out of a vintage hand book teaching young ballet dancers of the proper positions of the body, arms and feet. There are also torn segments out of various dictionaries, of the words: 'Ballet', 'Ballerina', 'Dance'. All the ballerinas are Degas' famous dancing girls, which I painted in acrylics, slightly overlaying each other, like ethereal and otherworldly spirits of music and dance. There is also his famous bronze sculpture of the little ballerina age 14, with her fabric skirt. This girl appears in my painting on the full length of the painting, as well as in two more angles of her face and bodice. As the thin layers of acrylics are so transparent, they allow to show the ballerinas through each other, and still allow the music notes to show through all the layers. All the stated sizes are the image size, not including the white border. All items are packaged carefully to ensure they arrive in perfect condition. Smaller prints will be sent using sturdy flat mailers and larger prints will be sent using protective postal tubes. You can purchase this print on 2 types of paper: Acid-free Giclee or Fine art satin paper. All of my prints are produced to the highest standards using the highest quality 315gsm archival acid-free Giclee paper or highest quality 260gsm Fine art satin paper – to suit the customer’s choice and preference. (See my FAQ for more details about the difference between the 2 types of paper). The papers I use work beautifully with my long lasting vibrant inks and give my prints great depth and quality. Please note: I photograph my artwork professionally and make every effort to have it done as accurately as possible. Due to differences in monitor settings, the colour of the actual artwork may vary slightly from the image previewed on any given monitor due to the variable colour settings on monitors, laptops, tablets and smart phones.
