Even today, there are some amazing homes built during the colonial period that still stand proudly. Despite war, neglect, and the passage of time, these homes serve as a reminder of the early settlers from countries throughout Europe who influenced the course of United States history.

An historic Quaker meeting house, on Fourth and West Streets in Wilmington, in an area of the city called Quaker Hill. The meeting has been in continual use since 1748. A former member of the meeting, Thomas Garrett, who is buried on the meeting house grounds, collaborated with Harriet Tubman, a heroine of the Underground Railroad, to hide slaves escaping from southern plantations into free Philadelphia. The meeting also played a major role in the Hicksite controversy, a division among Quakers between mostly farmers under the leadership of Elias Hicks (1748-1830), a universalist and abolitionist, and wealthier Quakers in the Philadelphia area. The schism eventually was healed, but its contours are still reflected in differences between more mystic, universalistic, anti-doctrinal, and unprogrammed (silent meeting) Quakers, and programmed (Evangelical style worship) Quakers. The Wilmington Meeting not only sided with Hicks but published a newspaper to defend his views, which were regarded by his followers to be more in line with the teaching of George Fox and other early Quaker leaders in England.
