This large vintage demijohn is a true piece of history. Crafted using two tones of wicker and green glass, it exudes vintage charm and elegance. This double handled demijohn hails from Europe, where it was probably used to transport and store precious liquids, the wicker originally designed to protect the glass vessels during transport. The light green hue of the glass is timeless. Authenticity often lies in imperfections. Look closely, and find signs of its age and craftsmanship. The demijohn’s narrow neck and wide, bulbous body give it a distinctive silhouette. Whether placed on a rustic farmhouse table, a vintage sideboard, or part of a British Colonial vignette, this demijohn adds character. It would also be beautiful as a standalone piece and focal point. Antique demijohns are highly sought after by collectors and interior decorators. Their scarcity and unique design make them coveted pieces. less

About Whether you like to call them, carboy or demijohn or jimmy john, they all refer to the same glass containers. Carboy originates from the Persian word; qarabah. Demijohn comes from the French; dame-Jeanne, or Lady Jane and derives from the 17th century and refers to any glass vessel, with a large body, capable of holding from 5 and 16 gallons of liquid, with a small neck and presumably encased in wicker. In England, demijohn refers to an imperial gallon, used for the fermentation process in brewing.

Green Glass Demijohns, 1950, Set of 2, in Good conditions. Designed 1950 to 1959
.
Demijohn originally referred to any glass vessel with a large body and small neck, enclosed in wickerwork. The word presumably comes from the French dame-jeanne, literally "Lady Jane", and was first used in France in the 17th century when demijohns were in wide use until the early 1900s. This authentic antique French demijohn or carboy has wood on wire handles, a lovely green glass, and is encased in the original wooden slat container with straw lining for protection. A red metal flange around the top reads Brevete Perrin & Fils Rognonas and amazingly the name and address of the customer is penned on a tag still attached to the handle (THIERY Raymond/ 24 Rud Schoepflin/ COLMAR)-- making this a rare find! Original casing still very much intact. Imperfections include a chipped edge on the rim of the bottle and wear and tear on the slatted container which is in keeping with the age and use of this item. less
Demijohn - 1 gallon t/t stoneware with transferred badge to each side - 'Union Cordial Works, Bendigo' - shaking hands t/m - original wire handle - lip chips to rim have been restored and stopper replaced. An attractive demijohn - hard to find. Condition: Good.
Made by hand at the start of the 1900s, this bottle was originally used to store wine, hence the olive green glass to filter out light so as not to spoil the contents. This demijohn retains its original cork. Please note photographs for minor surface scratch. Use this large bottle to create a focal point with unruly branches! More about Demijohn history: Also known as "Dame Jeanne" bottles. In 1347, Queen Jane, Queen of Naples and Countess of Provence (La Reine Jeanne) was expelled from her kingdom and sought refuge in Provence. As she passed through the village of Grasse, a thunderstorm hit, and she asked a local man for shelter. He was a glass blower. The Queen asked the gentleman to demonstrate how he blew glass. Nervously, in royal company, he overdid the blowing and created an enormous bottle! She loved the bottle and suggested he name them Lady Jane bottles or Dame Jeanne. Shop Similar here. Due to the blown-glass process, sometimes bubbles and imperfections result from the process. Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
