Germany - Belgium floods. Jul 12-15, 2021 - A month's worth of rain fell across northern Europe within a 48hr period affecting many river basins. Mass flooding inundated many countries (England, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Croatia), but severely affected Germany and Belgium where the floodwaters caused devastating destruction to homes and infrastructure when multiple rivers burst their banks. 177 people were killed in Germany (another 155 missing) - 37 people killed in Belgium (11 missing

L' Innovation fire. May 22, 1967 - Rue Neuve, Brussels, Belguim 🇧🇪 The department store was an exhibit that featured and sold American merchandise. There were more than 1,000 people inside the 5-story building when the fire began around 1:30pm, and the entire structure was engulfed in just 10 minutes. Cries of "fire!" caused panic, and thick black smoke enveloped the stairway so people rushed to the windows, some jumping to their death. 251 people were killed in the blaze, 62 others injured.
1907 Romanian Peasant's Revolt. Feb 21 to Apr 5 - The impoverished Romanian population were tired of suffering under the wealthy landowners and a wave of deadly rioting swept the country. Unable to handle the masses the conservative government folded. The Liberals ruthlessly crushed the rioters, and in less than one week after seizing power it was over. The exact number of casualties is unknown because King Carol I had all documents destroyed - most estimates put the number at 11,000
The Fall of Saigon. Apr 30, 1975 - South Vietnam. The capture of the capital of South Vietnam by the Northern People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Viet Cong (NVA) marked the end of the Vietnam War and the defeat of US forces resulting in the evacuation of all US diplomatic, military and civilian personnel (Operation Frequent Wind) in the largest helicopter evacuation in history. SL-1 nuclear meltdown. Jan 3, 1961 - Idaho Falls, Idaho, USA 🇺🇸 The 'SL-1' (Stationary Low-Power Reactor No. 1) was a US Army experimental nuclear reactor. A steam explosion and meltdown occured killing its 3 operators due to the improper withdrawl of the central control rod, responsible for absorbing neutrons in the reactor core. About 80 curies (3.0 TBq) of iodine 131 and about 1,100 curies (41 TBq) of fission products were released into the atmosphere
Eastern Air Lines flight 212. Sept 11, 1974 - Charlotte, North Carolina, USA 🇺🇸 The Douglas DC-9-31 was a domestic flight from Charleston to Chicago with a stopover in Charlotte carrying 78 passengers and 4 crew. While attempting to land at Charlotte in dense ground fog, the aircraft crashed into the ground 3 miles (5km) from Douglas Municipal Airport, killing 72 of the 82 people on board and injured the 10 others. The primary cause of the crash was multiple crew and pilot errors
Popayan plane crash. Sept 15, 2019 - Southwestern Columbia 🇨🇴 The Piper PA31 was on a regional flight operated by local airline Transpacifico and was flying a domestic route from Popayan to Lopez de Micay carrying 9 people aboard (including crew). At 2:11pm (local time), shortly after take off the aircraft crashed into nearby homes killing 7 people aboard and injuring 3 others (including a child on the ground).
Siji Kaiyuan hotel collapse. Jul 12, 2021 - Suzhou, Jiangsu province, China 🇨🇳 The Siji Kaiyuan hotel opened in 2018, and operated as a budget hotel with 54 rooms. That afternoon, a three-story section of the building collapsed (cause is unknown and is currently being investigated), trapping 23 registered guests in the rubble and debris. 17 people have been confirmed dead, five were hospitalized, and one person was uninjured and sent home.

Hotel Corona de Aragón fire. July 12, 1979 - Zaragoza, Spain 🇪🇸 There were 300 registered guests at the 10-story/five star hotel, mostly Spanish citizens. Nearly 200 guests managed to evacuate - some climbed down ropes made of bedsheets or tossed children out of windows into firemen's nets. Two nearby USAF helicopters were used to evacuate guests sheltered in the pool on the roof, but at least 80 people were unable to escape, and died in the blaze.
'Gulf Livestock 1' sinking. Sept 2, 2020 - off the coast of Japan 🇯🇵 The ship was sailing from Napier (New Zealand) to Jingtang (China) with a crew of 43 people and a cargo of 5,867 live cattle. The ship encountered severe weather in the East China Sea due to Typhoon Maysak causing the ship's engine to fail. Later - the ship was struck by a large wave causing the vessel to capsize and sink. Only 3 crewmembers were rescued, only 2 survived.
'MV Limburg' attack. Oct 6, 2002 - Gulf of Aden - off Yemen 🇾🇪 The 1,089ft-(332m)-long oil tanker was sailing from Saudi Arabia to Malaysia carrying 397,000 barrels (63,100m³) of oil and was in the Gulf of Aden to pick up another load when it was attacked by 2 al-Qaeda suicide operatives who rammed an explosives-laden dingy into the starboard side of the ship. The explosion killed both terrorists and 1 crewmember (+ 12 wounded), the ship caught fire and 90,000 barrels (14,000m³) of oil spilled
Xenia tornado. Apr 3, 1974 - Ohio, USA 🇺🇸 Part of the 'Super Outbreak', the violent F5 touched down southwest of Xenia at 4:30pm and slammed into subdivisions, sweeping away entire rows of brick homes before the tornado moved through the length of downtown flattening apartment buildings, businesses, churches and schools, then continuing into the Pinecrest Garden District. About 1,400 buildings (roughly half the town) were damaged or destroyed, 36 people killed + 1,150 injured there
Hurricane Camille. Aug 14-22, 1969 - Cuba, Yucatán Peninsula and the USA. Camille was the second most intense tropical cyclone on record to strike the United States. It made landfall at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi as a major category 5 hurricane causing tremendous damage in its wake, it produced a 24ft (7.3m) storm surge, flattened nearly everything along the coast of Mississippi and caused major inland flooding. Camille killed a total of 259 people and caused $1.42 billion (1969 USD) in damages
Austral Líneas Aéreas flight 2553. Oct 10, 1997 - Nuevo Berlin, Uruguay 🇺🇾 The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 was on a domestic flight from Posadas to Buenos Aires carrying 69 passengers and 5 crew. Due to faulty instrument readings and pilot error the aircraft was performing beyond its structural limitations causing a slat to tear off resulting in catastrophic asymmetry in the airflow over the wing - the plane immediately became uncontrollable and crashed killing all 74 people aboard on impact.
