Loom-quilted or mock-quilted cottons, often called "Marseilles" or "Marcella" or "Manchester" cloth, rapidly gained in popularity in the 1760s and 1770s. The introduction of a weaving technique that could approximate the look of time-consuming hand quilting made warm, "quilted" garments like this ladies waistcoat more inexpensive and thus more widely available than ever before. Period images of diamond-quilted waistcoats and petticoats like this one abound in these two decades, providing solid evidence that they were worn across all social levels. This ladies waistcoat would be suitable as an "undergarment" worn either under the stays, or over the stays but under the outermost gown, jacket, or bedgown; evidence strongly suggests it was not meant to be visible. It is ideal for providing an extra layer of warmth, as it permits full and free torso and arm movement because of its closely-fitted style. This Marseilles ladies waistcoat - available in white or "natural" cream (shown in the photos) - is based on a number of extant pieces. It is entirely hand sewn using period stitches and construction techniques based on those sources. The edges are bound with cotton tape and it ties closed down the center front (with a 1-2" gap) using three sets of ties. A wool flannel version is also available in a natural off-white wool, lined with off-white linen, in an identical style. Please make your selection using the drop-down menu. This listing is for a CUSTOM waistcoat created to fit your specific measurements. The size WILL BE DIFFERENT depending on whether or not you intend to wear it under your stays or over them, so please measure according to how you plan to wear the waistcoat (i.e. without stays if you intend to wear it under your stays, or in your stays if you plan to wear it over them). When ordering, please provide in the "notes" section: 1) your waist measurement 2) your bust measurement 3) your back length measurement (nape of neck to natural waistline) PLEASE NOTE THAT BECAUSE THIS IS A SPECIAL ORDER, IT WILL TAKE 3-4 WEEKS TO SHIP. Because it is made entirely of 100% cotton materials (fabric, tape, and thread), the white version would be a lovely candidate for dying to your choice of period color! This ladies waistcoat is entirely hand sewn using period stitches and construction techniques and would be appropriate for use in reenacting or in a museum setting. A custom mock-quilted petticoat is also available! https://www.etsy.com/listing/172902818/custom-18th-century-hand-sewn-mock?ref=related-2 This item arrives to you with period documentation and care instructions.

This pattern features a 1918 two piece gathered skirt with front pockets. Skirt has left front closure which secures at front belt with a button, or desired finish, This pattern is quite a rare treat to have found, the original is by Simplex Pattern, a relatively unknown source at that time. SUGGESTED MATERIALS: Linen, Pique, Light Weight Woolens, Heavy Silks Fabric for size given: ~ 36 Inch wide material without nap - 2-5/8 Yards ~ 40 Inch wide material without nap - 2-1/2 Yards ~ 48 Inch wide material without nap - 2-3/8 Yards 2 inch wide belting - 1 yard This pattern was originally created by Dec. 30, 1919 and has been re-digitized into it's current format. All content falls under the copyright Vintage Pattern Lending Library 2004, and as such, no portion of this pattern may be photocopied or reproduced by any means without written consent. MPORTANT NOTE: The source material from which these early patterns are replicated contain much less information than the more modern patterns from the 1920's and 1930's. Patterns and fashion journals published during these eras presumed that the home seamstress possessed sufficient skills to construct a garment without detailed directions. As a result, patterns for facings, linings and other details - such as instructions on how to create trims, are sketchy at best -- and usually non-existent. It is very important when sewing these items to make a fitting mock-up of the pattern out of muslin or other waste fabric, and make all of the adjustments for your individual figure on the mock-up. Our patterns include seam allowances, grain lines and updated text for ease of construction. Patterns are reproduced directly from the original source material, with no changes in order to retain the historical accuracy of the pattern. Prior sewing experience and knowledge of working with vintage patterns is recommended. Please note: This is NOT a finished garment and the original documentation and pattern are NOT included. This is a DIGITAL VERSION, you will not receive a paper pattern. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INSTANT DOWNLOAD: Your purchase will be available for download once payment clears through Etsy. Wearing History #E-R144 "Leslie" Day and Evening Skirt Pattern E-PATTERN- download and print at home on US Letter or A4 size paper. This uses A LOT of paper. Also includes A0 paper size for copy shop printing. "Leslie" Day and Evening Skirt Pattern This lovely skirt is perfect for daywear or evening. The front has beautiful inset sides with gathering and a heart shaped waistband. The daytime version buttons down the front and hits at mid-calf length. The evening version is full length and the front is cut on the fold and opens at the side seam, and can also be cut a daytime length. The back of the skirt is un-gathered and cut with an a-line flare. Add a petticoat underneath for extra fullness (not included). *Note- this does not have pockets. The tops in the illustration are not included. The skirt does not have inside netting or skirt supports, so add a petticoat if you desire extra fullness** SIZES This pattern has been multi-sized to included sizes 24"-40" waist. Please enlarge second image for size chart. This pattern is based on a period original that was in size 28" waist. In the time period it was only available in sizes 23"-30" waist, with one size per packet. This pattern has the addition of sizes 32"-40" waist, and all sizes are included in the same packet. - Difficulty - Intermediate This garment uses basics like straight seams, buttonholes, gathering, and setting a waistband. The more intermediate skill is setting a curved seam, for the front of the skirt. - Yardage Requirements- Period yardage included and should be tested when making mock-up. Size charts have been added for modern fabric widths based on a non-directional fabric of 52" or wider. Allow extra for fabric that shrinks when laundered, or matching patterns, fabrics with a nap, or directional prints. -Additional Notes- Because this was based on a period original, a mock up is HIGHLY SUGGESTED. Test construction and fit on your unique figure before cutting into your fashion fabric. This pattern has slight alterations to the period original in order to ensure accuracy and add ease, as no waist ease was originally included. 0.5" of waist ease has been added. --HOW TO PRINT AND USE THIS E-PATTERN-- YOU WILL NEED ADOBE READER, A FREE PDF READER PROGRAM, IN ORDER TO OPEN AND PRINT THIS PATTERN. This pattern is formatted for USA Letter Size and A4 sized paper. You will need to print this pattern to 100% scale. Open the "READ-ME-FIRST" File for instructions on printing and piecing your pattern. This pattern is tiled into letter sized paper. This pattern file is formatted to fit on both sizes of paper, and there will be varying thicknesses of white border, which will be cut off, according to pattern instructions. You will print these documents on your home printer, cut, and tape them together, to form a larger pattern layout. Then you cut and use your pattern just as you would a normal home sewing pattern. This pattern comes in a ZIP folder that must be decompressed to use, and uses a LOT of paper. About Wearing History Resto-Vival™ Patterns Resto-Vival™ Patterns are original historic patterns that have been restored and revived. Original patterns are usually available only in single sizes, precut from tissue paper and totally unprinted, with details like grainlines and darts indicated only by small perforations. Resto-Vival™ patterns are printed on sturdy bond paper instead of tissue and clearly marked with drawn and labeled markings. These markings aid the modern sewer in understanding the markings of the original pattern and the construction of the garment. Resto-Vival™ patterns follow the period shapes of the original patterns, maintaining the historical accuracy of the completed garment. Original period instructions are included. These instructions are text only (unless otherwise noted) and fairly minimal, especially compared to instructions for modern patterns. At least an intermediate knowledge of dressmaking and a good familiarity with pattern construction is suggested. You may choose to have a modern or period sewing book handy to help with basic construction methods that the pattern instructions do not cover in detail. Also, fitting a muslin mockup is strongly recommended, as all garments were meant to be worn over period foundation garments or corsetry.
