Owning a dog has so many health benefits. Here I list 6 of the ones that may mean the most to you.
Regular vet checkups are important for all dogs, but they are particularly important for wrinkly breeds like English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs. Why? These breeds aren't unhealthier than any others, but are prone to some health issues that other breeds aren't. Here are the top 10 reasons why you should bring your wrinkly doggo to the vet: 1. To Monitor General Health Veterinary visits provide an opportunity to monitor the overall health of your pup. The vet will be able to detect potential signs of illness or infections early on and address them immediately before they can become more serious. 2. Vaccinations In order to protect your pup against certain diseases, it is essential that they stay up-to-date with their vaccinations. The veterinarian can administer necessary shots as part of a preventive care plan. 3. Skin Health Wrinkly breeds are prone to skin issues, such as bacterial and yeast infections on their folds. Prevention is key when it comes to fold dermatitis. Pet parents can first cleanse their dogs with wet wipes specifically made for wrinkles. These wipes are necessary for removing fungus, yeast and bacteria from their skin folds. Created specifically for dog wrinkles, Squishface Wrinkle Wipes will help to clean and prevent irritated, infected, or stinky dog wrinkles. Wrinkles are also prone to bacteria because they are warm and moist. Anything a dog comes into contact with— food, water, dirt— can find its way into their folds. A great paste to use for combatting these issues is the Squishface Wrinkle Paste. This paste helps address stinky dog wrinkles, but it also helps prevent them. Pet parents should apply this paste to their doggos every day for best results. That said, the vet can diagnose any skin problems that may be present and provide appropriate treatments, if needed. 4. Respiratory Issues Due to their shorter muzzles, wrinkly breeds may suffer from certain respiratory issues. These include conditions like brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and laryngeal paralysis. A veterinarian can assess your pup's breathing and recommend any necessary treatments if they're experiencing difficulty with respiration. 5. Parasite Prevention The vet will also be able to check for parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites that can cause irritation, infection, and other health problems in wrinkly pups. While it may be tempting to try at-home remedies, it is best to consult a vet for any parasite issues. 6. Weight Management Overweight and underweight dogs can develop serious health issues, so it is important to regularly monitor your pup’s weight. A vet will be able to tell you if your dog is at a healthy weight and provide tips on how to adjust their diet accordingly. 7. Nutrition Advice Your vet can also advise you on the best food for your pup based on their age, breed, and lifestyle. If you suspect your dog might have allergies or food sensitivities, a vet will be able to confirm and suggest changes to their diet. 8. Spay/Neuter It is important to get your pup spayed or neutered in order to prevent unwanted litters of puppies that may have unknown genetic diseases or health problems. 9. Behavioral Counseling If you have any questions about your pup’s behavior, the vet can provide advice on how to best address any issues. 10. Illness Diagnosis If your pup is exhibiting abnormal symptoms, such as vomiting, lethargy, or loss of appetite, the vet can diagnose and provide treatment to get your pup back on their feet as soon as possible. The Bottom Line Bringing your pup to the vet on a regular basis is essential for their overall wellbeing. With these 10 reasons in mind, you can be sure that your pup is getting all of the care they need to stay happy and healthy! January 16, 2022 - How can you help a puppy with an upset tummy? Many puppies experience puppy diarrhea due to their immature digestive and immune system. Here's what to do if your puppy has diarrhea.
The paws of a dog are an often-overlooked part of their anatomy, though they are essential for mobility and keeping our beloved pups healthy. In this post we’ll discuss some facts about canine paws and provide advice on the best way to care for them, with particular attention to breeds like English Bulldogs and Pugs that have unique needs. With the right information and guidance, you can keep your pup’s paws in tip-top shape! The Anatomy of the Paw At the most basic level, all canine paws consist of four main parts: Nails are located at the end of each toe and help protect the sensitive area of the pad below it. Pads are the thickened areas of skin found on either side of each toe that act as shock absorbers—especially on rougher terrain—cushioning your pup's bones and joints from too much impact. Paw webs are the thin pieces of skin between each toe that aid in keeping the paw moist and cushioning it from impacts. Digital tufts are the small patches of fur located between the toes which trap dirt particles to keep the paw clean. But aside from being essential parts of your pup's anatomy, they also serve unique purposes based on the breed. Breeds like English Bulldogs and Pugs have more webbed paws, which help them swim and keep them from slipping on slippery surfaces. And, did you know that dogs sweat through their paw pads? This helps them regulate body temperature when out walking in hot weather. Amazingly, a dog's paw prints can also be used to identify them, much like a human fingerprint! Caring for Your Doggo’s Paws Paw care doesn’t begin and end with knowledge about facts - it’s also important to know how best to take care of your pup's feet. Generally speaking, daily inspection is key in order to spot any signs of wear and tear or injury that need addressing. For example, dogs can often suffer from soreness due to the strain of walking on hard surfaces such as concrete for long periods of time. Trimming their nails regularly and investing in booties for protection against the elements are two other ways of caring for your pup’s paws. Is Paw Care the Same for Every Breed? While the basic principles of paw care remain the same across all breeds, there are some unique considerations to take when it comes to dogs like English Bulldogs and Pugs. For example, due to their short muzzles they can be prone to respiratory problems while out walking so it's important that you make sure they don't over-exert themselves in the heat. Both of these breeds also have short legs and bowed hind limbs, meaning they need extra support when walking on rough or sloped terrain. Additionally, the wrinkles commonly found on their faces can create a damp environment along with hot weather which leads to paw infections if not monitored closely. To help minimize this risk, we recommend cleaning your dog’s wrinkles daily to remove any dirt and moisture from their fur. Squishface products are a great choice for your dog care routine. Use Squishface Wrinkle Wipes on your pup's paws, as they are perfect for those hard-to-clean places. And you don't need to worry about you don’t need to worry about stinging or irritation since there’s no harsh chemicals! The Bottom Line Paws are an integral part of your pup’s anatomy, playing a key role in both mobility and regulating body temperature. It’s essential that dog owners pay particular attention to this often-overlooked area, especially when it comes to breeds like English Bulldogs, Frenchies, and Pugs. With the right care and treatment, your pup’s paws can stay healthy and happy for a lifetime! That being said, if you suspect any issues or simply need more advice on paw care, be sure to consult your vet. They will be able to provide you with personalized guidance tailored to your pup's individual needs. For more tips, tricks, and all things Squishface, don’t forget to visit the blog every week!
During the winter months, it can be difficult to keep our four-legged friends happy and healthy. As temperatures drop, many dogs suffer from common health problems that are unique to this season. From dry skin to arthritis, there are several issues that pet parents need to watch out for if they want their pup to remain in tip-top shape until spring arrives. In this blog post, we'll discuss the most common health issues for dogs during the winter and provide some tips on how you can help your furry friend stay healthier during these cold months. Do Dogs Get Sicker in Colder Months? Yes, dogs can get sick more often during winter due to decreased activity level and exposure to cold weather. Cold air can cause respiratory issues, such as coughing and congestion, while the decreased activity level can lead to other ailments. Respiratory issues are particularly common in brachycephalic dogs due to their flat faces, and they’re more prone to having issues with the cold. In addition, winter brings increased risk of parasites and bacterial infections due to wetter conditions. What Are the Most Common Health Issues During Winter? The most common health problems that affect dogs during the winter months include: Dry skin caused by reduced humidity in the air. Arthritis due to colder temperatures and less exercise. Coughing and congestion from cold air. Ear infections due to water getting trapped in the ear canal after playing in snow or swimming. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites that thrive in the wetter winter conditions. Gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea and vomiting caused by eating spoiled food or ingesting antifreeze. Tips To Keep Your Dog Healthy During the Colder Months. Fortunately, there are several steps pet parents can take to help keep their pup healthier during the winter months: Make sure your dog is on a regular flea, tick, and mite prevention routine. Provide warm bedding for your pup if they’ll be spending any time outdoors. Feed your pooch a high-quality diet with plenty of lean proteins and essential fatty acids. Consider adding omega 3 supplements to their food to help combat dry skin. Keep walk times shorter and more frequent, rather than one long session. Properly groom your pup, as mats can cause discomfort in colder temperatures. Keep your pup dry after playing in the snow or taking a swim. Prioritize your doggo's skincare routine by keeping the problem areas clean and free of debris and protected from moisture, yeast, fungus and bacteria. Monitor your pet for signs of distress during outdoor activities. The Bottom Line It's important to be aware of the potential health issues that can arise during winter for our canine companions. With proper preventive care and a few adjustments to their routine such as shorter walks and omega 3 supplements, you can ensure that your pup is healthy throughout the cold months ahead. An itchy butt can be a frustrating problem for dogs and their owners alike. There are many potential causes of rectal itchiness. Pet parents often report seeing their pooch scooting their butt on the floor or persistently licking and biting the area around their rear end. Here are several reasons your dog may have an itchy butt and remedies you might consider. Full Anal Glands Anal glands are a pair of sacs found on either side of your dog's anus. The glands produce a pheromone-rich fluid, typically expelled when pooping. However, if the sacs become too full, they can lead to discomfort and itchiness. Most times, your dog may only require a little help expressing the glands manually. However, if not manually or naturally expelled, the full anal glands can become impacted or infected. An abscess developing from an inflamed anal gland can be painful and costly to treat. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect an infected anal gland. Tail Pockets Wrinkly dog breeds may have wrinkles in surprising places, including right under the tail. Although not all wrinkly dogs have tail pockets, some that are particularly susceptible to having them are English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs. The tail pocket, which often resembles a dimple, can trap dirt, bacteria, fungus, and other irritants. When a dog’s tail pocket is irritated you may notice dry, flaky skin or even red, itchy skin in the area. If left untreated, the irritation could progress into a bacterial or yeast infection and you may notice an unpleasant smell. All of that can result in discomfort, which could cause your dog to bite or scratch on the area or scooting their bottoms on the floor to ease the itch. To prevent issues with the tail pocket it is important to clean and protect the area regularly with a Wrinkle Wipe and follow up with Wrinkle Paste. Allergies Allergies can irritate or dry out the skin causing your dog to scratch, bite, lick or even scoot on the ground to sooth their itchy skin. When they do that, they risk opening the skin which makes them more prone to yeast and bacterial infections. Using a topical cream that is made specifically for dogs that is created without water or alcohol and only the most essential ingredients is very important to calm and soothe their sensitive skin. Squishface Wrinkle Paste was created with that in mind and does not include common allergens such as lavender, aloe, lanolin or fragrances that are so commonly found in other products. Instead, our Wrinkle Paste includes calming shea butter and protective avocado oil to soothe sensitive skin and form a water-repellent barrier on to keep moisture, yeast, fungus and other bacteria at bay. The Bottom Line Watching your dog scooting, scratching, licking, or wincing in discomfort due to an itchy bottom can be hard. We recommend using Squishface Wrinkle Wipes and Wrinkle Paste to help clean and protect all dog wrinkles including their tail pockets and prevent them from getting an itchy bottom. For more information about tail pockets and how to keep them clean and protected read our blog post, “Does Your Dog Have a Tail Pocket.” For more tips, tricks, and all things Squishface, don’t forget to visit the blog every week!

May 16, 2023 - A comprehensive dog feeding guide written by a vet: Can you feed your dog different brands of food? How to safely change your pet's diet?
Keeping your dog's skin healthy and free from allergens can be a challenge, especially for breed with wrinkles such as English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs. While these breeds are known for their unique features, they’re also prone to allergies due to the folds of skin on their face and body that trap dirt and moisture. Common signs of an allergic reaction include itchy or dry patches, redness, and excessive shedding. Fortunately, there are several diet changes you can make to help keep your pup’s coat healthy as well as avoiding common allergens. The Best Diet Choices for Keeping Your Dog's Skin Healthy Good nutrition is essential for keeping your dog's skin healthy and allergy-free. Start by feeding your pup a balanced diet of quality proteins, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Proteins are essential for tissue repair and growth and can be found in meats such as chicken, beef, fish and eggs. Fats provide energy and help keep skin supple while adding flavor to food. Look for sources like flaxseed oil or fatty fish like salmon or sardines which also contain Omega-3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation. Whole grains are important for providing fiber which helps digestion as well as B vitamins which play an important role in skin health. In addition to a balanced meal, you can supplement your pup’s diet with natural ingredients that help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier including coconut oil, olive oil and fatty acids. You can also look for hypoallergenic foods formulated to provide nutrition while avoiding common allergens such as wheat, corn, and soy. Tips for Avoiding Common Allergens In addition to providing a healthy diet for your pup, there are several steps you can take to avoid common allergens: Clean your pet’s skin folds regularly with a gentle cleanser (or Squishface Wrinkle Wipes) that won’t irritate the skin. Avoid feeding table scraps or treats containing wheat, corn or soy which are common food allergens. Keep your pup away from areas where pollen may be present such as fields and parks during high pollen season. Regularly inspect your pup’s coat for signs of dryness, redness or itchy patches. Bathe your pup regularly with a hypoallergenic shampoo and use a conditioner to keep their coat soft and free of allergens. After bathing, dry your wrinkly doggo thoroughly with a towel. Be sure to get in between the skin folds and wrinkles so that no water is left behind. Moisture left inside the folds and wrinkles can cause irritation and even yeast infections. Once your dog is thoroughly dried, follow with Squishface Wrinkle Paste. Wrinkle Paste forms a water-repellent barrier on the skin surface which keeps moisture, yeast, fungus and other bacteria away. Use Wrinkle Paste as a protective barrier on your dog’s nose rope, wrinkles and skin folds, toes and tail pockets. apply a moisturizing lotion or spray to help keep the skin hydrated and comfortable. Additionally, talk to your vet about adding omega-3 fatty acids like fish oil into their diet as these can reduce inflammation in the skin caused by allergies. The Bottom Line By providing your pup with the right nutrition as well as avoiding common allergens, you can keep your dog’s skin healthy and free from allergies. If you have any concerns about what may be causing an allergic reaction in your pet, consult with your vet so they can diagnose the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
