A dogtrot house historically consisted of two log cabins connected by a breezeway or "dogtrot", all under a common roof. Typically one cabin was used for cooking and dining while the other was used as a private living space, such as a bedroom. Rice Family Log Home was built in 1828 and restored in 1974.The home, which Joseph Redmund Rice, Sr. constructed the home was between 1828 and 1838. The home served as a rest stop for immigrants and local residents traveling the Old San Antonio Road across early Texas. It is located in Mission Tejas State Historical Park 12 miles west of Alto on the historic 'El Camino Real' Texas Highway 21.The entrance to the park is in Weches, Texas. Inspired by the simple, functional, and honest design of historic dogtrot houses found throughout the South, this Porch House concept combines modest, factory-built rooms with site-built outdoor spaces.
I'd heard of a dog-house and have been there often, but a dog-trot house? Evidently, a dog-trot house, also called a breezeway, a dog-run or a possum-trot house was a style of house common throughout the south eastern United States in the late nineteenth century. It consisted of two cabins connected by a passageway under a common roof. One cabin would have been used for cooking and eating, the other for living and sleeping. This little modernist dog-trot house in Ramseur, North Carolina, is a reincarnation of the Zachary House designed by architect Stephen Atkinson some years ago. The cladding is corrugated iron or 'wrinkly tin' as the two owners, Terri Moffitt and Aushalom Caspi, both psychology professors at Duke University, like to call it. The same as they saw used extensively in New Zealand when they were conducting research in this country. The interior of this little house is very minimalistic and beautiful and by no means a dog-house...

Sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones. That is very true of the Dogtrot layout for a home. Early settlers in Texas needed a way to keep their homes cool during the brutal summer heat they were experiencing. Most of the anglo settlers came from European countries that have mild summers a

This small weekend house for a New Orleans couple is sited in the rural hills of southern Mississippi overlooking a small pond. Set in a context of small farms, scrub land and intermittent pine forests, the design draws its form and materiality from the simple vernacular prototypes anchored out in the neighboring fields: small barns, chicken coops, tin sheds and mobile homes. The dog trot prototype, typical in the rural South, was the plan generator, making the house a frame or gateway for the pond and landscape beyond. This open space, which serves as a sheltered and informal dining porch, provides a cool, breezy place to sit on hot days. The open porch divides and defines the functions of the structure which is comprised of four cells: a storage/workroom, the dining porch, a living space and a screened porch......more
