Dragonboats are used for the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing, an amateur watersport which has its roots in an ancient folk ritual of the past 2000 years throughout southern China. In modern racing, the standard crew is around 22, with 20 paddlers in pairs facing toward the bow of the boat, 1 drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddlers, and 1 steerer at the rear of the boat. The paddlers sit facing forwards and use a specific type of paddle which is not rigged to the boat in any way. Dragon boaters are paddlers not rowers or oarsmen. Usually, a carved dragon is attached to the bow end, but it is removed when the boat is anchored so it won't be stolen (as in this photo). There are dragonboat races all over the world today. This boat was docked at Port Credit Marina.
