About About this piece: “I made this image on New Year’s Day 2021 in Philadelphia. It was the first time I felt like including myself in the series. I had just bought my new camera, the X-Pro 3, and I set it up on a tripod in a large mirror. The composition was strictly organized, and I made a lot of pictures of myself. This one seemed the most natural. I turn the camera on myself rarely, but always with intention.” Exhibition Statement: "Figures of Color" is an ongoing project that looks closely at how black skin is represented in works of art, and the relationship between this representation and elements of light and darkness. Taking inspiration from painters such as Kerry James Marshall and John Key, the images contain a painterly quality which pushes the boundaries of photography. The work focuses on the marriage between color and form, engaging with stark Blackness as a symbol, while leaving room for creative interpretation. In a world that's constantly changing, it's interesting to think about all the ways in which black and white work together. This visual concept paired with the fundamental issues of race, make for a life-long personal project. Artist Bio: Marcus Maddox is a photographer (b. 1994) living and working in Philadelphia, PA. His work is characterized by a natural tone, guided by intuition and empathy. He became interested in making images while growing up in Nashville, TN, getting his start by observing local musicians. Drawn towards the personal, Maddox sets out to capture the human condition in a meaningful and cinematic way. His work has appeared in select publications including The New Yorker, NPR, American Chordata, Atmos Magazine, Wire Magazine, She Shreds Magazine, The FADER, New York Magazine, Philadelphia Magazine, The Independent Photographer, and The New York Times. Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. He subsequently attended the Escuela de Belles Artes in Barcelona before furthering his studies in Italy. Returning to California, he worked with a variety of artists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. An intuitive colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training and scientific research into color theory helped him create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, retained a verve and spontaneity that was uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and France. He exhibited widely and with success, including at the Louvre Museum and the Exposition des Artistes Etrangeres in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum.
