At an early stage Munch was : in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new epoch. Munch pintou a natureza exuberante, alternâncias sazonais do verão para o outono e do inverno para a primavera, de aragem com os cavalos até a colheita, e também como o homem e seu entorno caracterizam uns aos outros e são partes iguais de um todo maior. Tendo abandonado o estudo de engenharia devido a doenças freqüentes, Munch decidiu se tornar um artista. Seus primeiros trabalhos revelaram a influência dos pintores plein-ar, como Monet e Renoir. Em 1889, Munch começou a passar longos períodos em Paris. Exposto ao trabalho de Gauguin e outros simbolistas franceses, Munch desenvolveu uma linguagem simplificada de cores ousadas e linha sinuosa para expressar sua visão do sofrimento humano, como a doença e a morte, depressão e alienação. At an early stage Munch was recognized in Germany and central Europe as one of the creators of a new epoch.
