Photos from our trip to Adak, Alaska in January, 2012. Located in the middle of the Aleutian Islands more than 1,000 miles from Anchorage, Adak is the westernmost inhabited island in the United States. The U.S. established a military base on Adak in 1942 in response to the Japanese invasion of Attu and Kiska. During the Cold War, the island became a major anti-submarine warfare base and SOSUS station (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOSUS) More than 6,000 people lived on Adak before the base was decommissioned in 1997. Today about 120 people remain, and the island is popular with caribou hunters (like us). Virtually every building is abandoned, but the people who lived and worked here left nearly everything behind. Very few doors are locked any more. Wandering around Adak is a strange experience because you're in historical limbo, halfway between modern society and an archaeological expedition. As we explored fallout shelters and bunkers that housed nuclear weapons, it occurred to us that Adak is a living example of what the world might look like without us ... and if those bombs had ever been used.
