The origins of embroidery can be traced back to the Warring States period in China (500-300BC) and to Sweden's Migration period (300-700AD), and some would argue that it hasn't changed much over the centuries:
Given the choice, I prefer hand sewing over machine and appliqué has got to be one of my favourite techniques. It’s like a form of art, I guess – the way you can take the teeniest, tin…
Many fiber artists have captured dry, lacy leaves in quilts. They lend themselves so well to lustrous threads and machine embroidery. But, as anyone who has tried to create thread-only designs can tell you, patience and a good water-soluble stabilizer are absolute musts.

When stitching on this piece nowadays What comes to mind is Every Stone is an Island unto Itself I also thought shoreline rocks would "swoosh" between them. Spent a few days stitching swooshes. Decided this weekend to undo all those swooshes Spent two days so far unswooshing Just going with the flow! Thinking of adding hints of islands.... ....on the distant horizon. Just going with the flow. With on piece coming to it's completion Need to firm up plans on what to start next Playing around with colours. Just going with the flow I learnt something this winter In past winters I assumed snow tunnels we discovered were made by mice. But no It is the squirrels. We watch this little bird food devil slide down his tree straight into a tunnel at it's base and pop out of one of three tunnel entrances at the base of the bird feeder! Cheeky Happy Birthday Mark! I hope one thing leads to another in your studio today. And as Peter London says in "No More Secondhand Art" "... begin the initial phase with the open-ended statement Let's see what happens"
Thank goodness that textile embroidery is so much easier today. Modern embroidery machines make quick work of techniques that were tedious and labor intensive when done by hand. That means you can easily embellish most any item, whether wearable or display, with gorgeous embroidery. Actually this post will be a bit random . . . . . . kinda like how my week has felt. . . . . . & yet, things have been happening & completed!. . . (sort-a). . . I'll start by showing you what the UPS man brought this morning. . . ❀ . . . some cute little Cath Kidston blank booklets. I use these all the time. . . for so many things! I ♥ Cath Kidston things. . . so fresh - so cute. ❀ . . . a Max Lucado book. . . (one of my favorite authors) ❀ . . . & it finally happened. . . I wore out my VCR tape of 'You've Got Mail'. . . a movie that - when I'm working in the studio - I semi-regularly have on in the background when there is nothing on tv. . . (which can be often lately!). The last time I popped in the tape. . . it started getting so wobbly - I expected the tape could break at any moment - so I broke down & got the DVD . . . & the deluxe edition version. I figured that if it is still one of my favorites after the countless times I've watch it. . . then I would go for it. We're supposed to get a little rain this afternoon. . . so guess what I'll be watching?! On the getting things finished (beside an old VCR tape. . .!) A few items are all ready for my quilter. . . These are two version of one of my new designs. This one is called, 'Floye's Garden'. . . names after the wonderful garden that my Grandma tended - right next to their farmhouse. Whenever we visited the farm when I was little. . . as we were traveling the dirt roads that led to the farm, we would always look for the garden. . . that was the sign that this was the one. . . we were there. . . Grandma's Garden. I've done the design both in embroidery & in applique (using wonderful wool!). There will also be a few other little projects included in this new design. Here's what I'm working on today. . . . . . more peeks soon! ♥ Bren

In mid-March, we shot “Quilting Arts TV” Series 1800 at KS Productions in Solon, Ohio. It will start airing on about 400 public television stations across the U.S. in July. This is the fifth series I’ve hosted, and we had some fabulous guests. Here’s a sneak peek. (Note that some of these segments will be held until Series 1900, so you’ll have to wait a bit longer to see them.) Susan Carlson brought along Stevie, the life-sized salt-water crocodile. This piece measures 22 feet long, and it was quite amazing to have on set. Susan also shot a segment on creating a fabric collage spiral quilt to learn the basics of fabric collage. Esterita Austin shared tips for making portrait quilts; on transferring original imagery onto organza using acrylic and Lumiere metallic paints; and on using sheer colored organzas to create still lifes and landscapes. Melissa Averinos teaches how to make a yo-yo fabric brooch; a small piece of abstract wall art; and a hand-painted panel with fabric medium and Inktense color blocks. Quilting Arts magazine editor Vivika DeNegre joined me to talk about how to block a quilt so that it lies – or hangs – nice and flat. Wendy Butler Berns shot three segments: picture image machine appliqué; random pieced borders; and using Texture Magic. Here, she’s getting set up on the Bernina with the help of Andrea Goddard of Bernina: Here are some shots of the set and the equipment: Jane Davila shot segments on SolarFast sun printing with masks and printing with photographic negative designs on transparencies; on block printing; and on Citrasolv image transfers. Grace Errea’s segments are on explaining value, and the 8-value scale she uses; on her “heat-set” machine applique technique; and on randomly pieced backgrounds. Victoria Findlay Wolfe shot two segments: on how to cut precise pieces with a Sizzix machine, then Y-seam piecing on the Hex Flower; and how to beautifully piece free form curves. Here is the Green Room, where guests get their segments organized and wait until it is their turn on set: Rennae Haddidin used an Innova longarm machine in her two segments on creating a beautiful quilted drawstring bag; and on applying a binding to a quilt on the longarm. Joanne Sharpe demonstrates coloring book-style lettering quilts; quilts made from tone-on-tone white printed fabrics painted and colored with Inktense, Caran d'Ache, and Dye-na-Flow; and quilts painted and then free-motion quilted and embellished. Here I am with our fabulous make-up artist, Karen, who makes us all look great! Vivika and assistant editor Kristine Lundblad having a bit of fun on set: Nancy Wick taught how to thread paint and embellish on an Innova longarm quilting machine while creating a sculptured fabric poppy bowl; and how to make a scarf from fibers such as thread, ribbon, or roving. Cathy Vandiford Wiggins shot three segments on quilting leather, including how to use quilted leather panels in sewing projects such as vests, jackets, journal covers and bags; creating scraps of hides for wall art; and how to stabilize a larger piece of leather for quilting.
This week I've been trying to catch up with all my monthly quilting projects for May. I hate doing them at the last minute, but they'd been pushed aside while I was busy on other projects. I'm hoping to do better during June--maybe I'll get real ambitious and get June's projects done next week! We'll see how that goes! This particular block is NOT one that I made this past week; in fact, I made it a couple of months ago. But I just didn't like the contrast between the spool and the background. So I took out that section and just redid it. Now I think the white is just a bit too bright, so I may go back and change it again! The May block for the "And Sew On" project was "Keep Calm and Press On." I finished my block yesterday--the last day of the month! I think I'm getting a bit smarter with these paper piecing projects. This time, before I began sewing, I put my fabric selections up on my design wall and stepped back to look at them. It really seemed to help me avoid the contrast mistakes I've made with previous blocks. I REALLY only want to make each block once! This was the May block for the Lucky Stars block of the month. I thought that center fabric would go well with the others (and it does), but what I didn't bargain on was having such a big section of it right in the middle of the block. It kind of overwhelms the other fabrics. What I'm finding with paper piecing is that getting the technique down is the easy part--the challenge is choosing fabrics that go well with the particular pattern and with each other. I really need to utilize my design wall for its intended purpose--putting up designs and previewing them, BEFORE I sew my fabrics together. And I need to do it with EVERY block. I didn't do it with this star and I should have. Laura and I will be participating in a Walk/Run event today--walking 3 miles! We normally walk 2 miles so it will be interesting to see how we do. But there will be other people there which always provides Laura with plenty of motivation! And the walking course should be relatively flat, whereas here at home we've got lots of ups and downs when we go walking. I don't know if I'll get more sewing done today, but the day is still quite young (I woke up too early and couldn't get back to sleep), so there's PLENTY of time to Get More Done...Today! I'm linking with Kristy at Quiet Play for the "And Sew On" Block of the Month.
