Emil Nolde, original name Emil Hansen, (born Aug. 7, 1867, Nolde, near Bocholt, Ger.—died April 15, 1956, Seebüll, near Niebüll, W.Ger.), German Expressionist painter, printmaker, and watercolourist known for his violent religious works and his foreboding landscapes. Born of a peasant family, the youthful Nolde made his living as a wood-carver. He was able to study art formally only when some of his early works were reproduced and sold as postcards. In Paris Nolde began to paint works that bear a superficial affinity to Impressionistic painting. In 1906 he was invited to join Die Brücke, an association of Dresden-based Expressionist

Fine lithographs by artist EMIL NOLDE printed in Germany, 1963. A portfolio of more than 30 prints, all in fine condition, with beautiful, rich colors and detail. Each print is 9.5" wide x 12.75" high with small border around each image. Perfect for matting and framing. Verlag M. Dumont Schauberg, Cologne, Germany In 1937 Nolde, one of the leaders of German Expressionism and an enthusiastic supporter of Nazism, was rejected and branded a “degenerate” artist by the Nazis and included in their notorious 1937 exhibition “Entartete Kunst” (“Degenerate Art”), presented for derision as ugly and anti-German in spirit, imbued instead with the polluting aesthetics of Africa, Bolshevism, and Jewry. More than 1000 of his paintings were removed from museums around Germany. In 1941 he was forbidden to paint anything, so he went into hiding and created these “unpainted pictures” – small works of watercolor on paper because the smell of oil paint would have betrayed him. These vivid reproductions are printed in a nine and ten plate process. All of Nolde’s larger oil paintings, more than 105, produced after the war, came from these small works on paper. His story could be seen as a case study in the ambiguities, ironies, and absurdity of the intersection between art and politics in the 20th century. less

About Emil Nolde (1867-1956), Frauenprofil (Profile of a Woman), woodcut, 1917, signed in pencil lower right (also titled, numbered 8, and annotated III.10 lower left). Reference: Schiefler/MOsel 136, third state (of 3). In very good condition, 8 1/4 x 5 15/16, the sheet 11 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Provenance: Collection of H. Neuerburg, Koln (with the blindstamp lower left, Lugt 1344a). A fine fresh impression with considerable gaufrage, printed on a thin wove white/ivory paper with a partial circle watermark. Rare, particularly in this condition, only 12 impressions were made of this state (and three each of prior states) according to Nolde’s working notes; the composition was complete in the first state and only slight correctional changes made thereafter. In The Print in Germany 1880-1933 Frances Carey and Antony Griffiths note that in this period, with the exception of the few woodcuts printed in large commercial editions, Nolde and his wife printed all his woodcuts, and they were carefully inked “so that the design is carried almost entirely by blind-stamping. The very considerable relief imparted to the paper can be clearly seen in a raking light and on the verso of the sheet. A consequence of such careful inking is that no two impressions of the print will be exactly similar, and in fact Nolde seems to have deliberately varied the inking of his impressions to produce a variety of effects.”
