There seems to be some confusion about this Grade II Listed statue. It doesn't depict "some knight" – emphatically not, as that'd require fealty to a monarch, and Llywelyn held that status himself. The crown's a clue. Nor does it depict Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (Llywelyn II, 'The Last'), who died resisting the English invasion of 1282. Instead, it depicts ap Gruffydd's grandfather, Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn I, 'The Great'), who united and ruled Wales for forty years of fractious peace with England until his death in 1240. Probably born at Dolwyddelan in the Conwy Valley, Llywelyn was buried at Aberconwy Abbey. Some sources credit him as the founder of Conwy itself, but the walled town dates from the construction of Edward I's great castle on the site of the abbey. The painted bronze statue, on a column over a drinking fountain in Lancaster Square, was sculpted by E.O. Griffith and unveiled in 1898 to commemorate the introduction of the town's water supply. I've been aware of it since the 1970s, when the old route of the A55 carried a weekly invasion of English tourists though the heart of the mediæval town.
