Escape rooms are an engaging way to help students review content. Here are 5 ways to make a break out room activity work in your classroom!
Do you use escape rooms in your classroom? Are you reluctant because of the time it may take to prepare the materials? Have no fear, the answers are here! I have been using escape rooms in my classroom for about a year now and I have come up with several fun, low-prep solutions, and tips so that escape rooms can easily be incorporated into your classroom. All of the escape rooms that I have created have the teacher in mind (at all times!) Teachers have enough on their plates. I understand this because I'm a teacher, too! Yes, escape rooms can be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of one, you (and your students) won't be able to get enough of them! They are a fun learning tool and serve as an excellent team-building activity. They are great to use during back-to-school, before holidays or at the end-of-the-year, when students are full of energy! You don't necessarily NEED to use locks, but it is sometimes fun to use the lock as an introductory activity to the escape room itself. For example, I give each group one lock and a bunch of possible lock codes. You can give as many or as little as you'd like, depending on the time available. In order for the teams to gain access to the contents of the first escape room, they have to select that right combination and bring me the unlocked device! Once they do that, I hand them their first task and they are on their way. I use my escape rooms as races, so students are pretty frantic when they are unlocking their device. It's pretty funny to see them get excited about these activities, especially high school students. Sometimes it takes them a few tries, even if they selected the right combination, because they are in such a panic to get it open! Grab this FREE (Editable) Lock Challenge HERE! *Don't go out and buy the locks if you don't need to! Check with your school secretary first and use the extra locks that the school may already provide for the students!* Examples of the unlock code handouts I gave each group! While the escape room concept is typically designed for small groups, there is nothing to say that a student couldn't complete the activity individually or in pairs. I have given students an escape challenge if they are finished their work early, as a homework activity, and even as bonus work for a fun, critical-thinking assignment. Students are always happy to be working on something if they have nothing else to do, providing it is fun and engaging! Escape rooms created for classroom use are learning tools, so while students may be working on puzzles and games, they are still LEARNING! Perhaps the best part about escape rooms is that you do not have to grade them! Why? Because the activities in the challenge are aimed to promote collaboration amongst peers. Saying that, should you or your administration require that these activities be graded, you can easily give each participant this FREE Escape Room Participation Rubric for their efforts. This way, you can still hold students accountable for their work ethic. On a side note, if you're tech-savvy, you can definitely create Google Forms to make the answer checking even faster. Teachers, this one is especially for you! (But don't tell your students!) 😃 If you're not wanting to start anything new before a holiday break or you are trying to keep your classes under control with an impending holiday around the corner, check out these Holiday Escape Room activities. The best part? These are not content-specific, so these can easily be incorporated into any class where time could be filled. In addition, you can mix and match the challenges depending on the time available, so if you can't get through all of the challenges included, you can pick which ones will work best for students and save the rest for another year (or class). Anxious for the chaos that comes along with students before Christmas break, spring break, end-of-the-year, etc.? No problem! I've got you covered, in addition to several other holidays through the year! Check out all of my escape rooms, (including the ones pictured above) HERE! These fun activities and puzzles will help to calm the chaos (and help YOU keep you sanity) during those exciting times of the year. Students have to review for their tests anyway, so why not ultilize classtime effectively for this review? I create escape rooms for a variety of the units I teach. It takes a TON OF TIME, but it's a really effective way to see where your students' skills and/or abilities are at. For example, I wanted to see how much my students knew about the basics of a 5-paragraph essay, so I created an escape room that covered various elements about essays. This gave me an idea of what experience students had writing essays, as well, it serves as a good reminder of the important elements of an essay, which were the expectations and requirements of their upcoming assignment. This Essay Writing Escape Room reviews the following topics: (a) Types of Essays, (b) Parts of an Essay, (c) Essay Trivia, (d) 5 Paragraph Essay Format, (e) Thesis Statements, and (f) Essay Terminology. Students are not only learning more about the essay writing process, but also getting a refresher on what they may have previously learned. I hope some of these tips and tricks will give you a better idea about how you can incorporate escape room activities into your classrooms! Trust me, once you do one, they will want to do more! HAPPY ESCAPING!

See the full intro video here As a career exploration teacher, I am often required to teach careers and areas that are not my expertise. This was how I felt about the Health Science cluster. I wanted to teach it and make it fun, but my own knowledge was very limited. So I made this exciting Health Science Escape Room! I learned SO MUCH about this cluster in making it! This Escape Room requires no prep, though it’s a good idea for the teacher to watch the videos that accompany it when they are about to teach it for the first time. The Escape Room is entirely in a spreadsheet, and can be done in either Excel or Google Sheets. Students start in the "Therapeutics" room where they solve puzzles about different careers and incomes within that pathway. Once they have solved the puzzles, they will get the code to the next room, “Diagnostics” where there are new puzzles to solve involving careers in that pathway. There are five pathway rooms total: Therapeutic Services, Diagnostic Services, Support Services, Health Informatics, and Biotechnology & Research. As students unlock each room, the score sheet will reflect how they have done, making this a quick grade for the teacher. The score sheet can be printed or turned in digitally. This assignment can be completed in room order, or students can enter the password on the score sheet to go out of order. It can be a quick one-day activity where students explore one or two pathways of most interest to them, or an entire week, with a different pathway each day. Students tend to do better when they work in groups of 2-3 kids and help each other solve it. This escape room would be fun for older grades as well, who may complete it a bit quicker than younger kids. No knowledge of spreadsheets is required for this assignment, and by the time they are done, the students will know a bit more about each of the five pathways in the Health Science cluster! Download includes: Silent video key that demonstrates how to do the entire escape room Teacher printable keys Teacher key in Excel and Google Sheets Student Escape Room in Excel Student Escape Room link in Google Sheets Student instruction video (great for at home learners, absent students, or if you have a sub!) Video clip mp4 needed room 2 video (Youtube link also included) Article for room 5, also includes the link MP3 file for room 4. It is linked in the Excel version. **NOTE - When you download, please make sure to open the Google version by clicking on the link provided that forces a copy. DO NOT open the Excel version in Google--it will not work the same. If for some reason the link isn't working for you, it is also available in the teacher notes document. ***************************************************************************** Related Products Get the Bundle with Law, Finance, Agriculture, and Health Science! These resources are great tools for teaching students to teach themselves and I believe will be of great value to science teachers. If you would like to see the product as the student will view it, please click this link: Energy Basics Learning Activity ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Product Description This is a fully functional, completely digital escape room covering topics dealing with speed and acceleration. Students will answer questions and work problems dealing with both speed and acceleration. This product contains three online delivery options and can easily be utilized for distance learning. This activity can be used as an introductory assignment, but works best as a review assignment and enrichment activity for students. It was designed as a more rigorous follow-up to my Digital Learning Activity - Speed, Distance & Displacement activity and my Digital Learning Activity - Acceleration activity. Included in this activity are four fully viable options for using the assignment in your classroom: a Google Form version that can be accessed from any internet capable device (in my opinion this is the best option for using this activity in the classroom), a web site version that can be accessed from an internet ready device, a printable version that can be handed out to each student, and a Microsoft OneNote version that can be used by students who have access to this Microsoft app. Instructions for setting up and using each of the different versions of the escape room are included in the product download. A file containing the passwords for each page of the activity is also included. Once you begin using digital escape rooms, you will find that they are an exciting new way to provide instruction for your students. Having taught science in public schools for over 35 years, I don't get excited over many of the new techniques or activities. Most are simply repackaged versions of older ideas. Digital escape rooms are different, though. These activities teach students to solve problems, think critically and analytically, and also to read and follow directions. Students will not give up on these activities - they just keep on working. Students are challenged and are learning, but are having fun at the same time. Whether you purchase these activities or you decide to build your own, I strongly encourage teachers to get involved in using escape room activities in their classroom. This digital escape activity will challenge your students' problem solving and critical thinking skills while at the same time strengthening their understanding of the material. Students will be "playing a game" while learning. Students must read for context, answer questions, and use logic to move through the stages of this activity. When used as a small group activity, this notebook can be used to provide for collaborative learning in a competitive environment. Questions in the activity may require students to remember or discover facts and interpret information to find passwords. On average, to complete this assignment will require students have 40 to 50 minutes. This time is an approximation and will depend on the knowledge level of the students. Simply extract the files from the .zip file and you are ready to set up your escape room. The video preview is a generic example to give you some idea of how the escape activity will work. The preview is done using the Google Forms version of the activity and the web site version or the OneNote version will vary to some degree. You can visit Great Science Stuff to see more activities like this one. If you have questions, suggestions, comments, or any problems at all I would appreciate your feedback - positive or negative. I'm trying to refine these projects and optimize efficiency. Thanks.

Grammar Escape Room Activity - Commas, Spelling, Homophones, Capitalization: Help your students understand and practice grammar rules with this highly engaging interactive escape room breakout activity! Students will circulate the classroom to visit stations and complete puzzles and challenges related to the following grammar topics: commas, capitalization, homophones, and spelling. This will engage even your most reluctant students! How The Grammar Escape Room Activity Works: Students work in small groups and move about the classroom to five different stations to complete puzzles and activities related to grammar rules (commas, capitalization, homophones, and spelling). The goal of the escape room is to complete the task at each station successfully and retrieve a variety of mystery code words. Counting Comma Corrections: In the first station, students correct sentences by adding missing commas. They order the cards by how many grammar mistakes they fixed and use words on the cards to reveal a mystery word. Homophone Corrector: In the second station, students do a close reading of a paragraph about rollercoasters that contain homophone errors. Students put the correct homophones into the answer booklet to reveal a mystery word! Capitalization Puzzle: In the third station, students assemble four puzzles, revealing sentences containing errors in capitalization. Students are required to write down the words that should be capitalized and use the information to reveal a numeric code. Spelling Quotes: In the fourth station, students will read famous quotes that include an error with a commonly misspelled word. Students write the properly spelled word in the answer booklet to reveal a secret mystery word. The Encryption Station: The final station has students decode an encrypted message based on hidden symbols they have to find throughout the game to reveal a quote! Included in The Grammar Escape Room Activity: ➡️ Teacher Instructions: These detailed teacher instructions will help you facilitate the grammar escape room in your classroom. With step-by-step instructions, you'll feel totally confident implementing this breakout. ➡️ Classroom Poster: Welcome students and build anticipation by putting this Grammar Escape Room poster on your classroom door as they enter ➡️ Station Signs: Use these signs at each of the five stations, so students can easily keep track of which ones they have completed. ➡️ Station Instruction Cards: Each of the five tasks comes with an instruction card, so students know what to do to solve each task. ➡️ Escape Room Station Materials: Included are all the materials you need to set up each station, including envelope templates, comma cards, puzzle pieces, spelling quote cards, homophone close read assignment, and an encryption assignment. ➡️ Grammar Escape Room Answer Booklet: Students will use this booklet to record each of the mystery words they find at each station. My class worked in small groups to crack the codes and each one was sufficiently challenging and engaging. I used this as an end of year recap activity and it was a brilliant way to keep my class engaged in those last few weeks. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We used this for a class just before Christmas break (when students are sort of checked out mentally) and they were very engaged and got some extra grammar practice in before heading out for break. And I had to do very little to facilitate it. Great product! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I use this as a way to review before an assessment. They love working in teams and trying to be the first group to finish!
