September is here and autumn is on her way (at least in the Pacific Northwest) and its my tradition to create a fall wreath to welcome the changing seasons. I decided to make use of what I have on hand- lots of leaves in the yard that are already turning beautiful shades of brown and red. I started by collecting leaves in a variety of shapes and different shades of brown. Next I used Tulip 3-D paint in gold and embellished the surface of each leaf. Last, I glued all of the leaves to a wooden embroidery hoop. Voila! A simple but beautiful little fall wreath! Note- for those who have asked about the leaves lasting over time- I used leaves from wild Salal, a shrub that is growing all over our yard. The leaves are quite "heavy duty" and thick and are often used in flower arrangements/fresh and dried. When I create wreaths like this I am less concerned about lasting strength- its more about the process of creating an artful object that will last for just a little while. For a more permanent solution you could photocopy (in color) your fall leaves, cut out and then embellish gold.

Happy Winter Solstice! I love these Eucalyptus and Orange wreaths I made. Every time I walk by them the smell is wonderful. I love that they are festive, yet not overly so. Also, easy to make. Learn how to bend wire coat hangers into wreath forms, dry oranges, assemble your wreaths, and make mini wreaths as well; What You'll Need; Eucalyptus Oranges Wire Wire Coat Hangers Hammer What To Do; To Shape the Wreath Forms; Using your hands bend the wire coat hanger out of it's triangle shape. Bend it until it is more like a lumpy circle. Use the hammer to bang it in a circle. Use the hammer to smooth out the edges. It does not have to be perfect! The imperfections make it unique. To Dry the Oranges; Slice your oranges into about 1/8-1/4 inch thickness. Dehydrate in your dehydrator at 135° F for 4-12 hours. Or in your oven at it's lowest setting. How to tell when they are done? The oranges will no longer feel sticky or tacky. To Make the Wreaths; Using 2 inch strands of wire, attach sprigs of Eucalyptus to the form. Layer on more and more Eucalyptus until desired fullness is achieved. I like to leave a spot of wire bare, but you can cover as much as you want. Play around with thickness and direction of the Eucalyptus. Play around with the placement of the oranges. When you are pleased with the orange placement secure them down. Use two, one inch sections of wire per orange. Pierce the oranges and wrap the wire around the base. For Mini Eucalyptus Wreaths; To make the base, take a long piece of wire, and wrap it around itself, creating a circle. Using smaller pieces of Eucalyptus, attach them to the base with one inch sections of wire. Layer on and play around with thickness and placement.

I think I am a little wreath obsessed. I already have three on my DIY list for the holidays and I'm a bit worried I won't have the space to hang them. However, I doubt that will stop me. :) This fall citrus wreath (see tutorial here) was very easy to make but took quite a bit of patience. The oranges took over 20 hours in my dehydrator to dry out (no joke!) but could also be done in the oven. Once those are done though, putting it together only took about an hour. And it smells amazing!

Beginning with asymmetrical ovals and amorphous shapes, Australian textile artist Tammy Kanat (previously) loops, twists, and weaves her sizable wall hangings. Using a steel frame, Kanat hangs up the copper forms that provide the structure for her abstract tapestries. She then combines natural materials like wool, linen, and silk to create small tufts and organic rows of varying hues that add a range of densities and textures to each piece. More
