Daily Kos is a progressive news site that fights for democracy by giving our audience information and resources to win elections and impact government. Our coverage is assiduously factual, ethical, and unapologetically liberal. We amplify what we think is important, with the proper context—not just what is happening, but how it's happening and why people should care. We give you news you can do something about.
In search of weird and unique hotels in Europe, Gizmag’s Loz Blain visits a beautifully hand-carved treehouse village on the German-Polish border. The treetop hotel itself is remarkable, but as it turns out, the rest of "Culture Island" is just as amazing.

Are you a glamper? Does the idea of no Wi-fi for a few days sound like heaven?

Thank goodness for London’s late night openings. If it wasn’t for them we’re sure half the working population would be forever devoid of culture and community, starved of inspiration as…

Spain is one of my favorite places, somewhere I return to over and over again. I particularly love the Sagrada Familia and the beachside tapas of Barcelona, the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, the chilled vibe of Malaga, and the cultural heritage of Granada and Cordoba. But Spain has a darker side.Bloody religious statues and relics fill the Catholic churches, resonant with the history of the Inquisition and the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella, who forced the Jews to convert, leave, or die. Their empire took the faith to Latin America in search of gold and converts … at any cost.
This summer, I was fortunate to travel with my family in Germany and Southern Tyrolia. As a first stop, I went back to my hometown. Bad Kreuznach is a small city of about 45000 people in south-west Germany, about 80km from Frankfurt. The town is the average German town, some old stuff, some new, not very rich, not very poor. For photo buffs, it might be known by "Schneider-Kreuznach" lenses (which are now, for example, being used by Kodak). The Brückenhäuser shown here are on a River Nahe bridge that links the older parts of the town (curiously call "New Town or Neustadt) to the inner city. I do not recall when the were build. The front of one of the houses still shows a bullet from a war. No, not WWII (which destroyed quite a bit of the city) - the bullet was shot by the Swedes in 1632. Over the next few weeks, I'll post a few pictures taken on a walk down Memory Lane this Summer.

No, not “a space.” “A” space. A space shaped like an A. Like A for Attic. Or A for A-frame. A-shaped areas can feel cute, cozy or even like a childhood wonderment, depending on how they’re decorated. Any way they are, I like ’em. So go ahead, venture in, see how these rooms make you feel. Be careful, … Continue reading "A Space"

I'm having a bit of library-obsessed moment here if you don't mind. I stumbled upon this photograph of the Library of the Kremsmünster in Austria and just had to see more of this magical place. Little did I know I was going to the find treasure trove that is photographer Massimo Listri's work. He ha
