When I started studying Islam somewhat seriously, I listened to everyone —perennial Sufis, Salafis, Shia, and traditional scholars. For a while my favorite scholar was Bilal Philips. It took a while until I found my way and when I did I stuck with. After a year or two of going to lectures and conferences, I …
I spent a few years learning with various teachers and attending lectures around New York and thereafter traveling to Jordan to sit in on the majalis (learning sessions) there. I’ve been blessed to learn a lot from my teachers and am forever grateful to them. Having the freedom to travel and to study takes time …

The conversation around consent has evolved over the past decade. 10 years ago, it wouldn’t be uncommon to hear a male character on a TV sitcom laugh about attempting to get a woman to sleep with them by giving them ample alcohol. It’d be equally as likely to see female characters laugh about “getting so …

Believers, stay away from conjecture; acting upon some conjecture may lead to sin. Do not spy on one another or back-bite. Would any of you like to eat the disgusting dead flesh of your brother? Have fear of God; God accepts repentance and is All-merciful. (49:12) Backbiting is a part of life, or at least …
We teach our daughters to be independent, but is this the right approach? Is it the only approach? Or can we teach our daughters to be interdependent? To rely on themselves, yes, but also to rely on their family and even on the men in their lives.

At some point, I thought I might like to be a scholar. I suppose when I started studying Islam more actively I began to realize the dearth of female scholars. Outside of my life now, where I am blessed to have four main teachers in my life two of which are women, there were distinctly …
Had I been born an Egyptian during the time of Pharoahs it would’ve been a good time to be black. Black people were the ruling class. The oppressed class at least for a period of time were the Hebrews. But I was not born back then, I was born in 1988 in America, and being …
This mezze platter has all the flavor profiles I love: bright, sour, herby and savory. This one features two of my favorite dips: muhammara, a Syrian red pepper and walnut dip and baba ganoush, a roasted smoky eggplant and tahini dip. Both are full of intense but balanced flavors and summer is a great season to […]

Why do people get married? I was asked recently by a young woman after my lecture on the age of Lady ‘Aisha. Though the purpose of the question was vague, I answered anyhow; people marry for love, companionship, etc. Well, she followed up, how could someone find that with a 6-year-old? One of the biggest …

If there's one thing I love about being a grown up...and living in my own home, with my husband...it's entertaining. I love having friends {and family} over to dinner and making it a special evening. I especially loved it when I was able to indulge in wine {and other alcoholic beverages}, but I digress... One of my favorite things to do is put together a cheese platter. There are probably a million different ways to do it too...which makes it fun to experiment. Here are my tips to create a perfect cheese platter. First the whole basis of the platter: cheese. I suggest having 2-3 varieties...usually a soft cheese, stinky cheese and a hard cheese. My favorite soft cheese is brie, stinky cheese is gorgonzola {or blue cheese}, and hard cheese is parmesan {or some variety of the sort}. It's always fun to experiment, especially if you have a specialty store nearby. You may be surprised with what you like! Also, be sure to bring your cheese to room temperature before serving. Oh and for those of you wondering...I have the clear to eat soft cheese during my pregnancy...as long as the milk is pasteurized. Hallelujah to that! Next, I like to have a garnish with my cheese. I love fig jam. It is my absolute favorite and really brings out the best in the cheese. It adds the perfect sweet to the salt. Speaking of sweet and salty...it's nice to have some fresh fruit, like grapes and other fruit. My favorite is dried apricots. And for the salty, I love kalamata olives. Last, make sure you have a couple different options for crackers or bread. They should be hearty enough to withhold the cheese and bite size. Arranging it is also fun! Make sure to have a big platter or cutting board to display everything. It's nice to have a variety of color, since the cheese can tend to look pretty bland. I like to add some green leaves to brighten it up. Some other options I like to include with my cheese platter are: Marcona Almonds Prosciutto Lavender Honey Oil & Vinegar Strawberries What's your favorite cheese platter item? Hope you enjoy! Bon Appetit! xo natasha Linked to: Tasty Tuesdays

I was looking at some art, just admiring since I’m far from able to buy anything, and I came across a lot of pieces I took interest in. But I found myself saying “Ooh I love that, but I couldn’t have it in my house”. Despite being in love with moody, monotone and monochromatic works …
