With so many stunning bird species out there, they never cease to amaze with their wide range of colors, sizes, and other traits. Some of them have intricate and stunning plumage that can be compared to a fruit or a berry. This is especially true for a species of birds that are unsurprisingly called strawberry finches. These small, sparrow-sized birds of the family Estrildidae can be easily recognized for their scarlet body paired with tiny white dots.

Bull Finch
The scarlet finch (Carpodacus sipahi) is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae. It is found in the Himalayas from Uttarakhand state in the Indian Himalayas eastwards across Nepal, stretching further east to the adjacent hills of Northeast India and Southeast Asia as far south as Thailand. It is resident in the Himalayas, but many birds winter to the immediate south. Its natural habitat is temperate forests. It was described by the British naturalist Brian Houghton Hodgson in 1836 under the binomial name Corythus sipahi. The species name sipahi comes from the Hindustani word sipāhi for a soldier, the origin of the term sepoy. The scarlet finch was formerly placed in the monotypic genus Haematospiza but was moved to the rosefinch genus Carpodacus based on the results of molecular phylogenetic studies.
My partner Fiona noticed that Zebbies were drinking from this perch. I setup my camera a good distance from the water hole and waited in the mud. I had my shots (and very muddy pants) within 20 minutes. I wish I had taken my battery grip. Holding my camera steady in vertical orientation is much easier with the grip.
