Reinhard Dirscherl Award Foto für mare Während ich mich vor ein paar Tagen durch Fotos des diesjährigen World Press Photo Awards scrollte, fand ich obiges Foto von Reinhard Dirscherl , das den 2. Preis in der Kategorie Natur gewann. Es zeigt Sailfische aus dem Atlantik vor Yucatan in Mexiko bei einem Angriff auf Sardinen. Da Sailfisch hier im Indischen Ozean auch sehr verbreitet ist, bekam ich Lust nach mehr Fotos zu schauen, die diesen außergewöhnlichen Fisch bei seiner 'Arbeit' zeigen... Übrigens: DNA-Tests haben mittlerweile gezeigt, dass sowohl der atlantische wie der indo-pazifische Vertreter des Sailfischs genetisch identisch, also eine Spezies - Istiophorus platypterus - sind. While I was scrolling myself recently through photos of the latest World Press Photo Award, I found this photo on top of Reinhard Dirscherl who came out second in the category Nature, showing Atlantic Sailfish attacking Spanish sardines, off Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. As we have lots of sailfish too here in the Indian Ocean I got hooked and looked for more pics... Just for the records: "Until recently, sailfish were classified as two species, Indo-Pacific sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus, and Atlantic sailfish, Istiophorus albicans, but genetic studies show that they are all one species, Istiophorus platypterus." (source) photo: Life on the Edge Doch zuerst mal die ganz kleinen...Es ist "bekannt, dass der Segelfisch Schwarmfische wie Sardinen oder Makrelen frisst und sich zwischen Frühjahr und Herbst fortpflanzt, indem das Weibchen Abertausende millimetergroße Eier ins Wasser gibt, die dann von den Männchen befruchtet werden. Die daraus schlüpfenden, zunächst stachelbewehrten Larven wachsen im ersten Jahr explosionsartig, „auf einen Meter und mehr" (Quelle:mare).- But for starters first some juvenile sailfish...It is known that sailfish goes for schools of sardines and mackarel, and that they reproduce between spring and autumn, the female leaves thousands of millimeter-sized eggs in the sea, which will then be fertilized by the males. Doch ist der Fisch aufgeregt oder gestresst, wechselt er blitzschnell seine Tönung, bekommt etwa lila Punkte oder kräftige blaue Streifen oder verfärbt sich rot. ... Verantwortlich für das Farbenspiel sind Zellen, die in der obersten Hautschicht des Fisches liegen. Diese sogenannten Melanophoren enthalten dunkle Pigmente, die sich zusammenziehen können und so den Blick auf darunterliegende Zellen freigeben. In diesen sitzen winzige Kristalle, die Lichtwellen reflektieren. Weil sich die Lichtwellen teilweise überlagern, beginnt der Fisch in unterschiedlichen Farben zu funkeln. „Das Tier steuert das Zusammenziehen der Pigmente durch sein Nervensystem, vermutlich spielen Hormone wie Adrenalin dabei eine Rolle". But when the fish is excited or stressed, it changes his tone quickly, getting some purple dots or bright blue stripes or red discoloration.Responsible for the colors are cells located in the top layer of the skin of the fish. These so-called melanophores contain dark pigments that can be contracted and thus allow the view of underlying cells which are fitted with tiny crystals that reflect light waves. Because the light waves overlap in part, the fish begins to sparkle in different colors. Der v.a. mit seinen Eisbärfotos bekanntgewordene Wildlife-Fotograf Paul Nicklen, von dem 2008 ebenfalls eine sensationelle Fotoserie zu Sailfischen bei National Geographic zu finden ist, schreibt, dass Sailfische kooperieren wie man es von Wolfsrudeln kennt. So sicher man sich ist, dass das 'Segel' wie auch das Farbspiel beim Jagen eingesetzt werden, so wenig weiß man nach wie vor, ob und inwiefern diese Komponenten auch bei der Partnerwahl eine Rolle spielen. Da man Sailfische nicht in 'beobachtbaren Räumen' züchten kann, ist ihr Verhaltensspektrum nach wie vor in vielen Punkten rätselhaft. So weiß man immer noch nicht genau, wohin sie ziehen, wenn sie sich nicht vor den Küsten aufhalten, und auch nicht, ob sie dabei festen Routen folgen. ....they do not have any chance to survive. Although it seems proven that sailfish make use of their sails and colours during a hunt, a lot of other behaviours remain still a mystery. As one can't observe them in an aquarium, marine scientists still do not know much about the way they choose their partners, mating rituals (will they use then their colour too?) or about where they migrate to when they are not close to a coast and to which extent they follow fixed migration routes.
