More than 20 years later, A C Lucombe Jewellers and Dorothy's Perms, seen more clearly in the last 2 pictures in this album, are still trading. But the trolleybuses, which replaced the trams in this area in 1938, will soon be swept away and replaced by diesel buses. In this picture, the trolleybus on route 621, which has run down Seven Sisters Road from Manor House, will very soon turn left into Coleridge Road on the Finsbury Park turning loop. The Astoria Cinema is behind the cameraman. The wires leading from the Isledon Road exit can be seen curving round at the top of the picture. The road on the left is Fonthill Road. Another wonderfully atmospheric shot of a busy Finsbury Park in a bygone age. Photo by Terry Cooper. A good view of the auditorium with its amazing Moorish village scene above the proscenium and along the upper walls. This is a real treasure, thankfully now preserved. Many will remember this building, not just as a vast picture house, but also as a live venue for popular artists of the fifties and sixties. Pre-eminent would be The Beatles, who staged their Christmas show here for about 10 nights in December 1963 and January 1964, supported by The Fourmost, Billy J Kramer, Cilla Black and others whose names I've forgotten. The show was hosted by Rolf Harris. In 1971 the cinema was closed, but reopened as The Rainbow and was host to every important act in rock and pop in the seventies - Pink Floyd, Genesis, Santana, Little Feat, Moody Blues, David Bowie, Roxy Music, Doobie Brothers, Yes, Van Morrison, Donovan, John Martyn....... the list goes on and on.
