Happy Sunday. I'm linking up with Collaboration Cuties to share a favorite text to use with social studies. One of my favorite social studies books is Mapping Penny's World by Loreen Leedy. This book is very similar to Me On the Map by Joan Sweeney (another favorite). In this book Lisa learns about different types of maps. She uses her dog Penny to complete a mapping project. I love this book because of the illustrations, the in depth explanation of maps, and because it is part of a series of three books that feature Penny (Measuring Penny and It's Probably Penny). My first graders love all of these books. Below you will find a freebie to use with Mapping Penny's World. Students can draw a maps of their bedrooms and create a key to go with their maps. Click on the picture below if you would like a copy. The clip art is from Scrappin Doodles. I highly recommend Mapping Penny's World and all of the other Penny books for your classroom library. The stories are cute, the information is abundant, and your kids will really enjoy them. For more tried and true recommendation head on over to Collaboration Cuties and check out the other Must Read Mentor Texts for social studies. Thanks for reading and have a great week.

Hello Everyone! It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit. Here are some pics from the updated unit! If you would like the 30 page free printable unit CLICK HERE!! :) My second offering for today is a unit our curriculum team worked on this summer. We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in. This next unit is about other important historical figures. It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities. It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!! Here are a few pics from the unit! For your free 52 page Inventors Unit CLICK HERE!! :) So glad I had time to share these endeavors! Hope you can use at least parts of either one! It is my joy to be able to share and help your journey in the classroom or homefront become a little less stressful. As always, please let me know if this is something you can use, if there are any typos or problems, and if you would like to see something else in particular on this little blog. This freebie includes three activities to get your kiddos started with the Grade 4 Ontario Social Studies Unit- Early Societies 3000 BCE-1500 CE) The first activity is a discussion cube that students can roll and have meaningful discussions with a partner or small group. They are able to share their knowledge of early societies with some diagnostic questions. The second activity are discussion cards. You can use these cards for partner talks or whole class discussions. They are great to see what your students already know about the early societies and how they compare to their current day society. They are included in colour as well as black & white. The third activity ties into the inquiry piece of the unit. They are topic cards for early societies. I use them on chart paper and have students move to each topic to generate questions with a partner or small group. Then we use the questions to help guide the rest of our inquiries! Thanks and enjoy! :) Full unit now available Grade 4 Early Societies Bundle!
