'Shipwreck' by Rolando Duartes is a calm contemporary abstract art, an acrylic and charcoal painting on canvas with positive figurative elements (sea world, animals, old ships and boats which became home for marine life). The relaxing style of the painting, its vibrant pattern and its lovely blue color aesthetic makes it a wonderful choice for any interior decor. This contemporary work is an original art piece which is in excellent condition (new), shipped directly from the artist's current studio in Switzerland along with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed and dated by the artist. You will receive the painting mounted on wooden stretchers and ready to be displayed on a wall. Rolando Duartes was born in Havana, Cuba in 1955. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and studied Art History at the University of Havana. Rolando’s abstract acrylic paintings and creative drawings touch a variety of subjects and explore different styles. This work is from 'Animism' collection. Animism (from Latin anima, 'breath, spirit, life') is the world's oldest form of religion according to which all things—animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, even spoken words, buildings, and other artifacts—are experienced as animated and alive. It is sometimes described as a belief that various objects, places, and creatures possess distinctive spiritual qualities. Animism is still practiced in a variety of forms in many traditional societies. It is found at the root of the belief systems of many indigenous tribal people. Although each culture has its own different mythologies and rituals, 'animism' is said to describe the most common, foundational thread of indigenous peoples' 'spiritual' or 'supernatural' perspectives.

One of the more spectacular finds was this species of Acanthaceae with bright yellow flowers, growing among limestone rocks at the edge of a stream. I have never seen this before and I am hoping to find out a specific name for it soon.. Contrary to what I first believed this is not a Pseuderanthemum but a species of Ruspolia. Not that this really solves much of its identity crisis because Ruspolias are normally always red and not yellow. So the plot thickens. Confused??? Tune in next week for a new episode of "What the Heck is This????"

One animal that I have lots and lots of photos of from this trip is the Rhinoceros Iguana (Cyclura cornuta). It is one of 2 rock iguanas found in the Dominican Republic, the other one is more rare than this one but can be observed on Isla Cabritos. Unfortunately due to some poor planning on our part and some less than perfect information we were unable to actually go to the island, which was a huge disappointment. However on the bright side I got plenty of photos of these lizards, which for the most part were not shy at all. As you may notice from this photo, these large lizards escape from the heat by finding some shade to lie down in and wait for the cooler parts of the day. I thought it was pretty cool that many shaded spots had their own clusters of iguanas laying in them.

Dicentra canadensis (Goldie, 1822) - squirrel corn in Ohio, USA. (15 April 2017) Plants are multicellular, photosynthesizing eucaryotes. Most species occupy terrestrial environments, but they also occur in freshwater and saltwater aquatic environments. The oldest known land plants in the fossil record are Ordovician to Silurian. Land plant body fossils are known in Silurian sedimentary rocks - they are small and simple plants (e.g., Cooksonia). Fossil root traces in paleosol horizons are known in the Ordovician. During the Devonian, the first trees and forests appeared. Earth's initial forestation event occurred during the Middle to Late Paleozoic. Earth's continents have been partly to mostly covered with forests ever since the Late Devonian. Occasional mass extinction events temporarily removed most of Earth's plant ecosystems - this occurred at the Permian-Triassic boundary (251 million years ago) and the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago). The most conspicuous group of living plants is the angiosperms, the flowering plants. They first unambiguously appeared in the fossil record during the Cretaceous. They quickly dominated Earth's terrestrial ecosystems, and have dominated ever since. This domination was due to the evolutionary success of flowers, which are structures that greatly aid angiosperm reproduction. The oddly-named "squirrel corn" is a flowering plant native to eastern North America. The name is in reference to the shape of the underground bulbs. Classification: Plantae, Angiospermophyta, Ranunculales, Papaveraceae Locality: Rock Cut - trailside along bike/hiking path (= former railroad tracks), downhill from modern railroad tracks, south of Copeland Island & south-southeast of the town of Dresden, southern edge of the Muskingum River Valley, northern Muskingum County, eastern Ohio, USA (~vicinity of 40° 04’ 21.44” North latitude, ~81° 58’ 57.00” West longitude) ---------------------- See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dicentra_canadensis
