Introduction This Reading Relay Race Activity Packet is designed to provide educators and coaches with a dynamic, engaging way to teach phonics and sentence construction to students. Through a series of relay races and station-based activities, students will practice using CVC words, digraph words, and words with suffixes in sentences, enhancing their reading and writing skills in a fun, interactive environment. Word Stations Overview Objective: Students will practice phonics by reading lists of words that focus on specific phonetic elements: CVC words, digraph words, and words with suffixes. Instructions: With your baton in hand, take turns running to each of the 3 word stations. At each station, read the list of words. You can choose to read all words at once or one word at a time, whatever challenges you more. After reading, run back to your designated spot and pass the baton to the next person on your team. Cut out these lists to make 3 separate columns and place them at each station for easy reading. Sentence Stations Overview Objective: Students will engage with sentence structure by reading sentences that incorporate CVC words, digraph words, and words with suffixes. Instructions: With your baton in hand, take turns running to each of the 3 sentence stations. At each station, read each sentence. You can read all sentences at once or one sentence at a time to focus on comprehension and fluency. Once done, run back to your team and pass the baton to the next teammate. Prepare sentences ahead of time, cutting them out to create separate rows for each station. Fill-in-the-Blank Stations Overview Objective: To enhance understanding of word usage and sentence context by filling in blanks with appropriate words from a provided list, focusing on CVC words, digraph words, and words with suffixes. Instructions: With your baton in hand, take turns running to each of the 3 fill-in-the-blank stations. At each station, read the sentences provided and fill in the blanks with the correct word from the options. Decide whether to tackle all sentences at once or one at a time for a focused challenge. After completing the sentences, run back to your team and pass the baton to the next player. Organize the fill-in-the-blank sentences on separate cards or cut them out in rows for each station, ensuring clarity and accessibility for students to engage.
