This is the first time I've used something different from cardstock for one of my mixed media creations. I used a Tim Holtz framed panel and really didn't know where to start. I searched Pinterest for inspiration and could find any detailed instructions. So I resorted to just experimenting, after all, we're supposed to embrace…

Battus Philenor(Pipevine Swallowtail) -Male -Verso -Arizona, USA -(3 in wingspan). These butterflies can be found in North America and Central America. The larvae feed on plants within the genus Aristolochia(commonly known as Pipevine plants) which makes the larvae and the butterflies poisonous. This butterfly has bright colors to warn predators that it is poisonous, which is called aposematism. Because this butterfly is poisonous many non-poisonous butterflies mimic it, which is called Batesian mimicry. Some of the non-poisonous butterflies in North America which mimic this butterfly are: Limenitis Arthemis(Red-Spotted Purple), Papilio Glaucus Female(Eastern Tiger Swallowtail), Papilio Polyxenes Female(Eastern Black Swallowtail) and Papilio Troilus(Spicebush Swallowtail).
Jamie Zimolong spotted a moth outside her Maryland home who bore a striking resemblance to a dragon.

View large for more detail. Thought this would make a nice stained glass window. This was photographed on the CSU campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/6.3, 1/100 sec., 100 ISO, handheld) See my previous post for the whole dragonfly, if you're not too busy. NOTE: I'm changing my Flickr screen name to "phoGARDENtog" to be consistent with my blog's name and my Twitter account. I plan to make the name change sometime in mid July.

I already did an entry about the family Elateridae, but I received a very recognizable click beetle from Kit's mom in Virginia. It is the species Alaus oculatus, or the Eyed Click Beetle. Unlike the tiny brown click-beetles we find here on the west coast, which are barely 1/2 inch long, the Eyed Click Beetle is 25-45mm long, and is decorated by white specks and eye spots: large black circles outlined in white. It is commonly found in deciduous forests and woodlands. It can be found most of the year, but most commonly in the spring and summer. The larvae are predatory, feeding on the larvae of other insects, particularly boring beetles like Cerambycids. The adults may feed on nectar and plant juices, are winged, and are attracted to lights. Coleoptera; Polyphaga; Elateroidea; Elateridae; Agrypninae; Alaus oculatus Common Names: (Eastern) Eyed Click Beetle, Eyed Elater I always liked click beetles as a kid - they were harmless, flicked their bodies interestingly...I had never imagined they could get as large as this. It truly is a remarkable insect. The one pictured above is approximately 40mm long, and is actually the largest species of click beetle. Most elaterids are mottled-gray/brown/black and reach lengths of 12-30mm.
