This is a counterpart to the Czeck folk tale from the Open Road to Reading. In THIS tale, (supposedly French rather than Czeck), the role of the two sisters is reversed. Katinka (without an "r") is now the older, nasty sister while Dobrunka is the sweet, hard working little sister sent out into the snow on impossible missions. She comes upon the Twelve Little Men (Months) at their bonfire, and they take pity on her and grant her the out-of-season gifts she needs to placate Katinka. Of course, greedy Katinka runs out to grab more of these treats, is ungrateful and rude; and ends in a snowstorm January arranges just for her. How silly of me....I was so used to thinking of Kat(r)inka as the good sister that it has taken awhile to accept Dobrunka as the herione. From Bobbs-Merrill Third Reader by Clara Baker and Edna Baker, illustrated by Vera Stone, 1923.
