This beautiful statue is called The Gansey Girl and is in Bridlington Harbour in England. She is knitting a gansey while waiting for her loved one to return from sea. A Gansey is a traditional patterned "jumper" or sweater worn by fishermen for generations. The statue is by Steve Carvill, and the old photo of a girl knitting by Frank Meadow-Sutcliffe was his inspiration, circa 1880. It's a beautiful tribute to the knitters and their fishermen families. I've been making posts for our Franklin County Fiber Guild Facebook Page of anything fiber-related that I find interesting, and I'm going to post some of my posts here on my own blog.

The cover queen is back. Indie musician Lucy Dacus put her spin on two iconic Carole King songs: "Home Again" and "It's Too Late." As if covering songs as iconic as Cher's "Believe" or Regina Spektor's "Summer in the City" isn't hard enough, Lucy Dacus is always ready for a challenge. This time, she returned

About 'Oblique Ombre' textile installation by Fiber artist Jane Knight. Comprised of 31 elements and signed with a copper metal plaque. Jane Knight (1928-2013) was born in Grosse Pointe and received her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1951. After graduation, she worked as the Art Director for the Detroit based luxury department store JL Hudsons and designed for the Cranbrook Theater School. Due to her husband's employment at Eero Saarinen and Associates she was embraced by a Community of cutting-edge designers and architects at the epicenter of the modernism movement and was personal friends of Eero Saarinen, Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard and George Nelson to name a few. Jane was an avid traveler who always viewed the world magically with her creative eye. As an art collector herself, she highly regarded the work of Alexander Calder and Henri Matisse. Throughout her career, she created numerous freestanding, wall mounted and suspended fiber art sculptures for countless interior environments. Her artwork has been featured in books on fiber design, exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Chicago and New York and is included in several corporate collections including Borge Warner and Chrysler. Jane's body of work is a product of her perpetual need to create art and a constant conviction that ones home should be a continual environmental stimulus. Her wall hangings, which are considered to be her most important works, are comprised of brightly colored woolen strands encapsulating heavy lengths of jute fibers. These captivating works epitomize the vibrancy and textural exuberance that was so characteristic of the fiber art movement of the 1960s and 70s. Much like her contemporaries, Sheila Hicks and Olga de Amaral, Jane Knight was one of the few female artists of this important era who was able to push the boundaries of a medium usually considered to be a Craft into the realm of fine art. We currently only have about seven of her three-dimensional textile works remaining.

About The Artwork I explored shapes and lines inspired by Kandinsky's compositions, through use of discarded materials such as plastic, fabric and acrylic yarn waste. I used primarily embroidery and crochet as my techniques, with a bit of weaving. The result is a super lightweight composition. It is randomly draped over five pushpins - you may prefer to choose other angles, according to your desire, or change the work's orientation entirely. The crocheted fluorescent plastic plays with the traveling sunlight - or vice versa - certainly a joint effort in added amusement. This artwork will be shipped in a cardboard box secured by layers of bubblewrap. About The Artwork A garden where all creatures grow and roam free, in unity and love. Created from materials found at home: my clothes, mostly silk, odd threads and yarns, my embroideries, plastic nets. Some handmade beads made from paper collages. Crochet, weaving, knitting and embroidery were freely used for making this artwork. The artwork is light-weight and can be hung on nails, hooks or push-pins. Its size can be extended to 80 inches tall - in the photos provided it is folded over and draped to compensate for the position of inbuilt anchors on my wall. Its interactive components include creative draping and playing with some movable elements within the artwork. Some flowers are not permanently attached but are brooches that are equipped with pins on their back, therefore they can be moved around. Some ruching is free for manipulating to your heart's desire. Creative play and freedom with this artwork are encouraged and foster creative solutions. This artwork works on a wall, but could also be hung as a room divider, or in a doorway as its back is fully finished and contains additional messages to discover.
