The Foundling Hospital was described as being ‘For the maintenance and education of exposed and deserted young children’. Similar hospitals had already been established in Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Venice and Amsterdam and when Captain Thomas Coram returned to England he was shocked by what he saw, children dying and discarded in the streets of…

Textiles - Foundling Hospital Swatches - Free ebook download as PDF File (.pdf), Text File (.txt) or view presentation slides online. The document discusses textile swatches and tokens that were left with infants delivered to the Foundling Hospital in 18th century London. Mothers would leave a small piece of fabric or token to help identify the child if the mother ever returned. Examples of fabric swatches included plain linen, embroidered fabrics, printed fabrics, striped fabrics, silk, and ribbons. The tokens provided clues about the child like their name, date of birth, and parish of origin in hopes of reuniting mother and child. The Foundling Hospital kept detailed records of the tokens and swatches to help identify over 25,000 abandoned children that passed through the organization from 1741 to 1954.
When babies were left at the Foundling Hospital in London in the 18th century, the only things identifying them were tiny scraps of fabric.

I knew when I picked it that I wouldn’t be ready to compete in a triathlon until 2012. So I was tempted to pick it again for my word of the year. But instead I chose cultivate. I read “Cultivate a Good Life and Record It” and every part of me shouted “Yes!” Because there is so much more that I want to do and that I want to be. It is fantastic to be healthy and fit again. Now it is time to hold on to my level of fitness and turn my attention towards other pieces of my pie. Because training can be so consuming, I wanted a word that would pull me to create that good life.
