Sewing Eyes Onto Your Needle Felted Animal - in just 4 steps and 5 minutes!
Since I'm still enamored with needle felting, the challenge was on to find a new small gift or ornament to share with co-workers and friends this holiday season. I love the inspiration of working on small, handwork goodies while listening to audiobooks or just relaxing in the evening. If there can be a kitty on my lap at the same time: bonus! Last year's gifts were felted Lake Superior stones and the year before, fairy sparkle felted acorns nestled in hand-gathered Canadian forest caps. They were all hard to part with. Many years ago I saw a tiny felted ring bowl for a wedding gift. It was signed with the couple's initials and a little heart. I never forgot it, and since I have a general bowl/container obsession anyway, I researched how to make needle felted bowls. Several people mentioned using styrofoam balls to get the shape started, so that's what I did. Worked like a charm. It's important to keep flipping the roving as you work it, so it doesn't become permanently attached to the ball. Some of the styrofoam will crumble and attach to your work, but I found that if I kept felting, it fell off or disappeared into the wool. Once the bowl shape was somewhat established, I just worked it in my hand, particularly around the rim. Near the end I added angelina fibers and embroidery, plus beads to add some bling. The felted bowls are lovely just plain, soft and warm, but I can't help myself. What will next year's felting bring? There's a new yarn shop in town, so it seems likely that roving will continue to make its way into my supply stash. Hoping 2016 will be the most creative year ever.
this japanese craft book brings a new and adorable idea to the world of needle felted goodness. this book represents a trip around the world, including small needle-felted items representing 14 countries. it includes small animals, food, motifs, decorations, holiday and other miniature scenes, and mini flags. projects include: a girl, wooden shoes, and windmill scene from holland: playful pandas from china; mama and baby koala and mama and baby kangaroo from australia; sheep from new zealand; matryoshka dolls from russia; mini donuts, hamburgers and coffee cups charms from the u.s.; a monkey with maracas and cactus from mexico; an elephant from india; tropical fish mobile from palau; a rabbit gondolier from italy; santa claus and bag of toys from finland, and a little house scene; bears and trees from canada; teddy bears and a castle from germany; bagette and eiffel tower charms from france; scottie dogs and bobbies and bus charms from the u.k. all written directions are in japanese, but the excellent and detailed step by step photo instructions, and diagrams for each project that shows the shape and size of each part mean that if you are familiar with the basics of needle felting (which you probably could pick up in a couple hours with online directions) you should be able to do most of these projects. a few techniques that are included are felting around a foam base (for the small vignettes with buildings); adding eyes (plastic, not felted) to teddy bears, and sewing a cord to make the small felted items into charms. the animals and characters are made with solid forms, and don't require any wire armature.

Now I don't profess to be an expert on this, but Louise asked if needle felting was hard, so I'm going to show you how I do it. I didn't use an armature on Hyacinth, but I am using one here for this dog. Cut two pieces of pipe cleaner 4" long and one piece 3 1/2" long. Bend them into the shapes shown. It should end up looking like this. See, two leg parts and one head/body/tail part. Now twist the leg parts around the body part. With a few bends in the right places it's already starting to look like a dog. It almost takes on a life of its own. "Bad dog, stop that! Don't embarrass me in front of the nice ladies." Now take a piece of roving about 5" long and starting at the hip, wrap it around the leg working down to the foot. At the foot turn and start wrapping back up the leg. Now a word about the needles. I'm just a beginner and only have two needles. I don't know anything about size or type, and even with my little pink glasses, I can't see the barbs, but apparently there are barbs on these wickedly sharp things that sort of "tangle" the fibers together. The barbs are up a ways from the tip so you have to poke the needle through the fibers at least 1/2" to make the magic happen. Now start poking through the leg from all angles to secure the fibers. Try to avoid poking the pipe cleaner because that's bad for the needle. You can use the foam block to work on the little parts, or if you're brave and like blood, hold it in your hand. Because I guarantee, sooner or later, you will poke yourself. And like I said these things are WICKEDLY sharp. So be careful if you work in hand. Repeat that routine on all the legs, then do the tail and head and maybe two layers on the body. Your dog should eventually look like that bad dog's sister here. By the way, she is quite well behaved and would never embarrass me in front of you nice ladies. So this is the first part of making a felted dog. Tomorrow we'll start the details and work on house training here Amongst The Oaks.

As a grownup, it may not be considered entirely apt for you to be found drooling over cute cuddly stuffed animals unless you wanted to be seen as an eccentric one. However, let us admit that most of us do drool over these and do tend to have a cuddle or two when you are out buying cuddly stuffed toys for kids. However, this article will make you feel good because it is about felt animals’ art, which means that you can make cute animals using felt but label it as an art or craft. The best aspect of felt animals’ art, is that you can create the animal in the way you want it instead of the standard cutesy stuffed animals that you get in the market. If you want to get inspired, you can look at cute pictures of baby animals to make your heart smile. This will send your thoughts and creativity in the right direction. And the best part about working on felt animals’ art is that it need not always be a toy. You can use it to decorate other things and use it for other purposes.
